Only three in the last 64 years and all them were in a five year period.

It would be nice for the Canadian owned horse to win it this year but alas, he will probably choke in the Belmont like that horse a few years ago.

If I am not mistaken, and I very well could be, the Timeform system has never tabulated horses who ran exclusively on US soil. So the 3 greatest horses in horse racing History would all be excluded from that ranking. Secretariat, Man O' War, and Citation being the three horses I speak of. I would also include Phar Lap as the horse to complete the Grand Slam of greatest race horses ever.

I say that to share a bit of trivia. Phar Lap, Man O' War, and Secretariat all had the nickname Big Red. Citation was a Bay horse.

There will never be another horse like Secretariat. We may have a Triple Crown winner, but no horse will ever do what that horse did. His dominance at the Belmont is the greatest athletic feat of all time.

I know there were some old horse racing historians who believed Phar Lap was the best ever.

It's true. Timeform just rate European racing.

So Sea Bird II is excluded as being one of the three greatest racehorse of all time is because he didn't race in the US? OK. :laugh2:

I had the great pleasure of seeing Sea Bird II win the Derby back in 1965. My father was a huge horse racing fan and we lived just a few miles away from Epsom. I have seen a lot of the great racehorses in my life and none compare to Sea Bird II for his effortless grace and class.

I wouldn't attempt to compare horses. It's an impossible task IMO. I won't attempt to argue against your three choices. There is no way to compare. Different eras. Different courses. European and US horse racing are very very different.

All I would say about Sea Bird is he beat what's widely considered to be the greatest Prix del'Arc de Triomphe field in history by an effortless six lengths. The field included four Derby winners and other notable horses that had won various Group 1 races. As I say it's just my preference and I very much doubt if I will ever live to see the like again.

Anyone ever been to a big time horse race?

I've heard it's a great place to meet ladies. Especially in the infield.

I am thinking about going...found a guy in the Pentagon selling two tickets for $70. Seems like a steal for all you can drink beer (if that's your thing) and a bunch of concerts by Maroon 5, Wiz Kalifa, etc.

Should I consider it?

Apologies, I didn't mean to derail the thread. Back to your topic.

Never have been to the Preakness. LOL

I've been to many big race meetings in the UK. The Derby, Oaks, 1000gns, 2000gns, Grand National, Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle etc etc. IMO, a day out at major horse racing event is a real fun day out. You'll get to see horses of a very high standard. Top class sporting events IMO are worth a visit if only once. Anything else will be gravy. ;)

And Secretariat not being rated by that same group you like so much is just as wrong.

Frankly Sea Bird just did not impress me that much. Did some research on him since you mentioned him.

There were several writers who watched him and Secretariat and none that I have found thought he was anywhere near as good.
