I have no idea what Jerry is thinking. If hes playing 3D chess or just drunk. But there is a legit opportunity for a rebuild come 2027.
First, let me preface this as what I would do, not what I think Jerry is thinking or will do. But maybe he stumbles into it.
2027 is the year to watch. And how do we navigate to make the most of it.
Lets first talk this year. Its a prove it year for Dak. Aside from a dominant RB, Dak has the weapons and the draft capital in oline.
We have a killer schedule and no one is predicting us to even make the playoffs. I see things shaking out in 3 ways:
1. We have a losing record. Offense is average at best. Dak shows to be average. Trade deadline. What do you do? Sell or stay put?
2. Now, Dak could also play exceptionally well. Still losing games due to the defense, but playing at a top 2 or 3 QB level. Trade deadline, sell or stay put?
3. Dak plays great. Deffense comes together and we have a winning record come trade deadline. Stay put or buy?
So what camp are you in? 1, 2 or 3?
Im in camp 1. So what to do and why is 2027 the year? Tyler Smith and Dak.
What if we, or more importantly Dak, is not the guy? We have to move on. 2027 is the year we can do that. And why Tyler Smith? Trade him at the deadline. Hes signed through 2026, yes. But he will most likely want 23+ mill a year. And will be looking for an extension/new contract next year. Add in Diggs as a trade option. Heck, maybe even Bland. Would also explain why we are going heavy at OG right now. To see if we have someone who could at least be serviceable at OG.
The key is to work it so that you, at a minimum, have draft capital to get the top QB in 2027. If option 1 happens, Id look to trade both first round picks next year for 2027 picks. Get future picks for Smith, Diggs and Bland. We have Reval, Butler and Carson in the pipeline. We'll know about what they are by 2027.
2026 and 2027 are shaping up to be very solid draft classes. If Dak fails this year, Ive just laid out a plan to at least give hope to Cowboys fans in 2027. Is this what Jerry is thinking? Doubtful. But it could be. And it could give us some hope for a future
