The 66 yard fg that never was

It may be the refs' fault but the coaching staff should not have let it come down to that. They employ a dozen assistants...there should always be someone responsible for monitoring the playclock and communicating to McCarthy so they can let the refs know in advance. It's pretty easy to notice if the playclock wasn't reset and then you tell the ref right away instead of being surprised when it's too late.

It was ballsy for McCarthy to go for the 66 yarder in that situation. He would have been crucified if the Browns ended up with points off the return of a short kick.

Hopefully we'll get to see a 70 yard attempt in a better situation to go for it.

Just watched
Replay. The last Brown stumbled into his position between 4 and 5 seconds on playclock.
The official vacated his spot (allowing the snap to take place) with just two seconds on the play clock. That’s too close for comfort

Returner vs mostly bigger, slower dudes IMO wasn't worth the risk if it was short.
Dallas had a good lead at the half, no need to risk that.
It was clear already that the Browns couldn't do anything meaningful on offense. At worst we give them 3 extra points. Not that big of a deal in a game like that.

He’s going to end up setting the NFL record this season and you can see it coming. During the preseason he converted a 66 yarder that would have been good from 72. He made a 66 yarder yesterday that would’ve tied the NFL record, but it was negated because of a time out.
And it probably would have been good from 70.

As I stated on the heels football board, Mack Brown and Mike are the 2 worse clock managers in both NFL and College and that is saying something, when Jason Garrett is above you and he iced his own kicker before.

You don't think a kick returned for a TD wouldn't swing momentum to end the 1st half?

At best, Dallas is going into the intermission with a 23-3 lead. If the kick was short, and returned for a TD, we are talking about a 20-10 lead.

Brandon just went all out on a 66 yard kick. Could he have enough leg to repeat it and make it? Maybe. But add 5 yards to that attempt. To me, it just wasn't worth the risk of a Browns return and a shift in players confidence.

What would we ever do without another 3 points in a 3 score victory?

Can complain about MM's overall time mgmt since he got here but nitpicking stuff like this is why fans need better health insurance.

Blaming McCarthy isn’t the only problem. Years back, head coaches could not call time out. It could only be called by a player on the field.

Players can see the play clock too, and if they get down to one second left, they should have seen it and called time out themselves. Players don’t have to depend on the coach to call the time out.

Not sure why you are making this kind of issue out of it. Nobody is seriously criticizing mm for it. Some are just personally and happily cheering on and for the best kicker in nfl.

McCarthy and Fassel were INCENSED that the clock was reset properly and that the refs allowed Cleveland to basically make a substitution that delayed the play even more. The refs were sloppy as well.
The refs did not know how to respond in a timely manner since that question was off their preprogrammed list of available answers.

He'll cost us at least 1 game this year with his poor clock management. They won big but it's still Garrett-like to ruin an all time FG out of stupidity
I am not sure I would have kicked the 71 yarder. I would be afraid that if he was short, it could be returned for a td. Better safe than sorry. 66 yes, 71 no imho. Guess that's why I am not a coach.

I didn’t see it anywhere, but was McCarthy ever asked about why he didn’t use one of his timeouts instead of taking the delay of game penalty on Aubrey’s 66 yard fg?
Because the clock was never reset it was quite obvious during the game the referees made a mistake and instead of correcting it they just shrugged it off as usual I don't think they saw the clock running down because they had 40 seconds in their minds and it just ran out early.. Sure they should have been looking at the clock and took a time out but they are not responsible for the referees making a mistake but I would have liked to have seen him use a timeout but I don't remember did we have a timeout to use..

What about the 71 yarder that never was?
It was the smart move not to kick it from there because of the potential return and giving Cleveland any hope or any positive yards or anything I agreed with them not going for the 71 yards that's something for the fans but as a coach he did the smart thing by punting it.. Someday at the end of a game where it's win or lose and you can try a 71 yarder 'cause that's all you have then we can do that.

I wish they would have tried it. That was a near perfect opportunity, and it was clear the Browns were over matched on both sides of the ball by that time.

I do think Aubrey would have hit it. I want to see the world's first 70 yarder in regulation.
...by a Cowboy!!!

Can any player on the field call a time out or just the captains? Or do they now have to be called by the sidelines?
