The arrogance

I normally don't get all ra-ra about this kind of thing but today it frustrated me pretty bad. Every team in our division made some good moves today. The Commanders got Orakpo, Giants get Hakeem Nicks, Beatty and Sintim, and the Eagles pick Maclin and McCoy. Obviously, these three teams do not have the thinking that they just WON A SUPERBOWL like us. Ohh wait, we didnt win the Superbowl last year and there lies the problem.

Wade Phillps has the odassity(sp) to say " No one in this draft can play on our team this year." I see Mr. Phillps has not changed like he said he would. Ohh no, how dare a rookie press a veteran. Or, we dont need any friendly competetion. To him the starters are who they are and its not going to change. This is the exact arrogance that gets us elimnated early every year. What does Flozell have to worry about if he jumps offsides 2x per game? These players will continue to slack off. I really hate to say it.

Look at Arizona. They made BOLD moves by sitting their top flight prospect in Matt Leinart for the veteran Warner. In addition, benched former highly touted running back/big money free agent Edgerian James for Tim Hightower. All of this going into the season. We dont dare to make any of those moves. On top of that all of the Arizona players come into the season with the thinking of "if they're going to bench him they certainly could bench me." Well, Arizona went to the Superbowl.

Todays draft we drafted as if we're coming off a Superbowl victory. It reminded me of the year when we kept trading back and passing on Derrick Brooks. We ended up picking Sherman Williams I beileve late in the 2nd round and followed by the tight end from Texas A'M I beileve Kendall Watkins. This years Derrick Brooks is Sean Smith. I have to admit I dont know much about him but he looked like a player. Anyways, I know we got Roy Williams for the 20th pick, fine, but dont give me this stuff that no one in this draft can start for us. Thats arrogance coming from an 8-8/9-7 team. I know we were 9-7 but as Bill Parcells say's "we are who we are" and thats what we are. I never seen a team that so overrates themselves than us. We/I do it, the media does it and most importantly management does. Taken todays draft as an example we havent learned our lesson as of yet.

I don't understand all the handwringing.

The VRF followed their draft board. There was no value left on their draft board and were fortunate to find someone to trade out with.

Jerry's damned if he does or damned if he doesn't. I applaud him for following the draft board.

who should have been drafted at 51 then? which guy that was going to walk straight into the team and instantly improve it would you have picked? and has been said countless times RW11 improves this team way more than anything on the board at #20

Put the razor knife down--- Its not worth it man, its not worth it. Suicide will not solve your problems. The Cowboys have had good luck with these type of picks. Witten, Barber, Canty, Choice, Scandrick, Ratliff, James. Thats just throwing some names around without a lot of thought.

Arch, the handwriting can be attributed to typing at 4am. My apologies.

Anyways, I disagree. The point of this post was to try to show our organzation is acting as if were a powerhouse team in this league. On paper, yes, we are a powerhouse team. On the field, no, we are far from a dominate team and we need to start acting like it. To say that nobody in this draft has a chance of starting on this team is wrong. Thats the arrogance of a winning orgazation but the problem is we havent won anything since the mid 90's. Just the facts. We need to be hungry instead. Just my opinion.

This is the thinking I don't understand. So what if they can't come in a start day one. What about next year when Spears and Sensenbaugh are too expensive to re-sign? Who's going to fill in when Kosier and Holland are let go? I'd much rather have William Moore, Sean Smith, or Max Unger ready to go in 2010 than anyone we might possibly get today. The bottom line is that trading back reaps lesser players. It always has and always will. It's a fine strategy to escape the ridiculously high salaries of the top of round 1 or if you are short on picks but makes no sense when you have a team full of needs and already have a bunch of second day picks. At some point, the extra picks are totally useless becvause there is no room on the roster for them. There were very good players available at 51 or within reach for a measly 5th or 6th. To me, that was the better move!

To say no one in this draft can start now for this team shows me a fatal flaw in their draft philosophy. Again not saying this won't work out well. But doesn't it bother you that only one other team has our philosophy?

Finally logic interjected. We only moved back a few spots anyway. The ability to have to selections is more valuable than the one selection with what was left on the board. Jerry is finally sticking to getting value and building this team long term instead of reaching all the time. Even if he misses this strategy is the most sound over time.

I liked Sean Smith but I've heard a lot about his flaws since he's been picked. Larry Brown said that he made "business decisions" when tackling. Something that is unacceptable if you want him to play safety. And Mike Mayock pointed out times that he gambled a lot and hung his safety out to dry. Not a good thing for a cb. So I think he was one of the guys Ciskowski wanted to stay away from, more an athlete than a football player.

Outstanding post.

Most will simply not get it. I do. That was aces.

I think Jerry should keep trading down until he has about 12 5th round picks to package to the Lions for another player from a winless team!

He said handwringing not hand writting.

And he's absolutely, 100% right.

Sorry, that's simply wrong. Scandrick and Jenkins saw the field quite a bit as rookies, and while they're not rookies this year, we let Henry the veteran go so that these kids can play and be key contributors.

It all comes down to roster spots. The roster is not big enough to keep developmental players unless they can contribute on special teams. If our scouts and coaches honestly believe that the value was not there at 51, then trading down was the right move.

What draftboard? The one where all the teams ahead of us has them picking the players we coveted? We weren't prepared for what happened and we didn't have a plan B. All this talk about none of these players coulda started for us is nothing but Jerry trying to justify his lack of preparation for this draft.

Same, same, same ditto! I really think we will get a few good players today, but more importantly,I strongly suspect OUR next years draft begins today, and from all I hear,it should be a much better draft in terms of quality.
