That's an interesting view.
I've been listening to Metallica since Kill 'em All was fresh cut vinyl and I don't think they flew so high for so long. Master of Puppets started the spark and And Justice for All got them the needed attention, but they weren't main stream and really flying high until the Black Album and from there it was all down hill.
Pretty short lived by most musical standards, considering the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and the like that have had monster careers. Mind you, I'm not comparing them, just the length of careers and impact on music in general. 17 years isn't much time and Metallica hasn't made any where near a mark on music like some of the classics.
I heard one song off the new album and felt they are just trying to recapture their old fire. I can honestly say that I have changed and that does effect how I perceive their music, but I think their time has passed.
