The bootleg

Just curious, when do opposing defenses key in on the bootleg? Or is our threat to run always going to keep them honest?

They're about to for sure. That freebie is going to dry up.

Washington played it well last week, but Dak just calmly got the ball to Swaim. Next time, Swaim will be covered, too.

However, you can play that against a defense, too. If they cover for the roll out, they leave holes behind them if you don't roll out.

I love the bootleg even back when Staubach was running it. I think it puts pressure on defense, guys come up and leave the receiver or RB you toss it they stay back you run.

I would also add there are times when Dak is handing it off instead of play action bootleg which keeps the backside pursuit in check

They're concerned with stopping our run game , pressuring a rookie QB so that makes them crowd the line and more aggressive . The boot leg is a counter for defenses that are over aggressive . I don't believe it will always work but , for the Commanders game it was perfect. The Commanders were trying the be aggressive on defense rushing upfield and it worked against them. I've noticed through the years it's more effective vs 3-4 defenses.

A lot of people said we started using it last game, but I actually saw them run plenty of bootlegs in the first game if I remember correctly. I think the main difference we saw them using a more diverse passing routes, particularly in them moving Dez around.

Sure, defenses are going to cover the boot better, even Washington did toward the end of the game last week. But when they do that, then you can start just handing it off to the running back and if they are aggressively expecting the boot then suddenly Zeke is on their safeties.

I'd be worried about the Bootleg if Dak wasn't poised. But he knows when to get the pass off with pressure in his face and when to live to play another day with a slide.

I wouldn't be as comfortable with Weeden or Cassels doing it, lets just say that

One more thing for defenses to worry about
Skins keyed in it late because it was an obvious situation but can't always key on it, rush upfield and defend run

That's Dak's version of Romo's delayed handoff. It's money in the bank almost every time

Playing the bootleg doesn't have anything to do with 8 in the box. Success downfield to multiple receivers will fix that.

True but they can't just key on Elliott. The backside pursuit has to stay home so that Dak can't get to the edge and that does benefit the Running back

That is true from that perspective. I just want Dak to throw them out of those fronts.

Romo would have put up 50+ points both weeks against those defenses in those fronts.

I think Dak is doing what he needs to do at this stage of his career. He may not take the same risk that Romo would take and given the play of our defense that is not a bad thing as we have been able to control the ball and keep it away from opposing teams offense.

It will be effective as long as the running game is, especially the stretch plays.

When the running game gets bottled up teams will be able to play the bootleg.

Hopefully this will be the week the running game breaks out. It needs to soon with Cincy and GB upcoming.

No worries, when JG runs a play that works, he'll run it over and over and over until he's sure it won't ever work again.

No way we take Dak off the leash after two games, he is still a rookie and what he sees downfield is more fiction than reality at this point in his development. I see progress every time he steps on the field, it is very hard not to be very excited with this guy...

This is exactly what Dallas wants. Now with opposing DL respecting the bootleg, you eliminate that weak side DE crashing down and making a tackle on the running back.
