shefter also said this though

Now the NFL draft point chart is not set in concrete; teams can use their own guidelines and decide whether a certain trade is fair even if it doesn't measure out on the chart

They also fail to mention that some of these teams are way more than one player away from contending and are not sold on the high price that they have to pay for a top Draft pick that may or may not pan out.

Unless a Cap is established on rookie contracts, the old JJ value chart will go the way of the dinosaur.

that would really kill us big time.

Why? Think about it. The Cowboys really only need a 3rd CB, a backup RB, and a 2nd receiver to really be an all-around dominant team (likely anyway). If Pacman comes to Dallas you've got one of your bases covered. If you trade up for McFadden you don't get a 2nd receiver (unless a trade for Roy Williams or such goes down), but you do likely get a dominant running back. The Cowboys went 13-3 last year without a dominant running back or a solid 2nd receiver, so that can't be too bad of a situation.

I think your can argue the merits of such a trade, but I don't think there's any need to get too down if it happens. It wouldn't destroy the franchise.

And...if the Cowboys somehow get Pacman, McFadden and Roy Williams, you've got a team that might be even more dominant than the Pats were last year. They are on paper anyway.

The draft can't get here soon enough. I'm going to nervous when the 4th pick comes up and on my toes as to whether a trade occurs.

As a side note, for the flow of the draft, I think they should cut the #1 pick's "on the clock" time to 2 minutes. Miami has been "on the clock" since the end of the season. Why do they need another 15 minutes? #1 pick gets 2 minutes, then everyone else gets 15. That's my proposal.

Plus, that way we will be getting to the 4th pick about a half hour in.

If you think McFadden is the next OJ Simpson (like Bayless seems to think), I'd have no problem going up to get him.

If is the operative word.

Having said that, let's assume it will take two No.1s and a No. 2, do you do it?

I would if I thought McFadden was all that.

As has been said, the Cowboys need CB, RB and WR.

We can get a corner in the third, especially if we get PacMan, as the case appears to be.

As for a WR? Who's to say that the Cowboys can't trade for Roy Williams with their first round pick for next year, which will probably be a low first-round pick anyway.

You've essentially got your franchise RB, franchise WR and a corner to groom in two drafts. And we still have picks for next year.

No, I don't think it will happen. But I'm also not so married to draft picks that I don't think we should covet them just to add bodies. If there's a player you think is worthy moving up to get, you go for it.

Teams rise and they fall. You have to do what you think is right and not worry about blowing it simply because you gave up too much. We recovered from the Joey Galloway trade. We'll recover from this one if we go up and get McFadden and if he turns out to be a bust.

The draft chart is not as important as these talking heads try to make us think. I think you really need to look at the draft in the given year to determine value of certain picks.

Lets say this year is very deep. Meaning you can get almost the same quality of player at 10 as you can at 30. then the value of the 10th pick isnt nearly that high. Teams will actually want out of these picks because they can get almost the same quality at a cheaper price and pick up an extra pick or player.

So lets not make assumptions about what the value of the 5th pick would really be. Especially in a year where their are about 3 "franchise" players available. If that.

Totally agree with you superonyx. The draft chart is a guide, not a set of commandments. Any gm following it blindly deserves to be fleeced.

I'm starting to think this is happening. I think JJ moves our 2 1st rounders and the 2nd rounder to get McFadden, provided we acquire Pac Man Jones with a late draft pick. The receiver will be acquired via a 2009 1st rounder through trade, as Peter King suggested, or by using our 3rd rounder on a complimentary type receiver like Hawkins or Eddie Royal who they spoke to at the combine or Senior Bowl can't remember which.

I am starting to wonder if the jets and dolphins will make a deal. If the Jets are as interested as they seem and they dont want to lose out on him to the raiders maybe they move.

Brian tannebaum and Bill Parcells are tight. Some kind of a deal could be worked with picks and players. Maybe the jets swap give a 2 and a 1 next year.

Tannebaum and parcells aren't that tight. No way will the jets give a division rival numerous draft picks. Tannebaum isn't stupid, he knows the dolphins aren't picking a running back.

All the jets need to do is sit tight and wacth Mcfadden fall to them. The only team standing in the way is the raiders.
