The Bucs signed QB Rudy Carpenter off the Cowboys' practice squad, which may be a sign that Byron Leftwich will soon be gone.

Carpenter was signed by the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State. Leftwich went 0-3 as the Bucs starter to open the season after beating out Luke McCown in training camp. He is now the team's No. 3 quarterback but hasn't practiced in the past several weeks due to tendinitis in his right elbow. Leftwich may be running out of options in the league.

Although this may not be a big deal in the big picture. The fact that it was the bucs again (mickens earlier as you all know) is annoying

I would love for them to fix the way the practice squad works. Maybe a team would get some type of compenstation for losing guys say same round you used to draft a guy or something like that. Or if that player is active for X amount of games ..etc . I know this guy wasnt drafted but stuff like this is my biggest pet peeve about the current version of the NFL in that you get penalized for doing your homework in the scouting and development just to lose them for nothing.

Another thing is if leftwitch does get cut and go to the steelers then that's even bigger B.S way to convienent with ben and batch banged up.

There are several young QB FA practice squad options out there if we wanted to fill that role.

right...honestly, this is no big deal. if they are worth keeping, they're not on the practice squad.

Bad idea. First, every player on a practice squad has been cut at least once, so their draft status is immaterial. Second, you would make it more difficult for a guy who is a part timer a spot on a roster in the NFL.

No one is penalized. If a team did their homework, scouting and development, and wanted to keep them, then just sign them to the roster. Short of that, every practice squad player if fair game for the entire league.

First reaction: what do the Bucs need another QB for?

Then again, Rudy Carpenter did show a little in preseason. Good for the Cowboys in that their practice squad players generate interest in the league. It shows the Cowboys were able to recognize talent.

More reps for Stephen McGee.

That could be a very good thing.

yeah, he needs ALOT of work. What a terrible pick that was...

Pick was head scratcher, but he was rated as top "2nd tier" QB.

We shall see.

What Stephen said is you don't want to have to go sign a semi-expensive 35 year old QB every time you need a back up.

this guy was better than mcgee.

He's a scrub who doesn't have an NFL arm and is never going to amount to anything. McGee, at least, has a shot to eventually play at the NFL level.

I hear ya, And your right to think of it from a players point of view because of course they would rather be on a roster than the PS. I was just thinking of it strickly as a fan and thought hey we found him , taught him our system and all and poof he's gone..lol Not neccasarilly talking about rudy in particular or even our team. just the system . thanks man

I'm just going to save this post for when McGee, who was picked as a developmental QB not expected to do anything at first, comes into his own in 4 or 5 years.

There probably is little likelihood of landing two Tony Romo's in sequence. No, the practice squad can be 'robbed' to supply 53 roster slots on teams. The league is geared at allowing for equal footing on their official rosters. Dallas has players playing now, that were on other team's practice squad also. At quarterback, the position is filled for a couple of years barring something strange happening. This might be a chance for this kid to get a legitimate shot somewhere down the road. I'm pretty happy with how Stephen Bowen has turned out, and he came from such sources. Hey, it all works together....

I will eat all the crow in the world if Mcgee turns out to be a solid QB. I watched him play in college and he was terrible. If the Cowboys wanted to develop a QB they could have picked up McGee later in the draft easily...what a waste of a 4th round pick. The Cowboys just were the team that bought Sherman's BS since he claimed he had NFL connections and would push teams to draft McGee...

McGee is good and can turn out to be good Quarterback, but overall I rather have Rudy Carpenter.
