Plus Coach Joe DeCamillis deserves some credit, too.

These are the big stats for the kickoff coverage team.

13 touchbacks ranks 1st
(ranked 32nd in 2008)

37.1% of kickoffs that are touchbacks ranks 4th
(ranked 32nd in 2008)

68.1 yards average kickoff ranks 6th
(ranked 31st in 2008)

20.9 yards per kick that is returned ranks 6th
(ranked 6th in 2008)

21.76 yard line is opponents average starting field position from either returns, touchbacks and kicks out of bounds ranks 2nd
(31.00 yard line ranked 31st in 2008) I had to edit these two numbers. Messed up my calcs just a little, but the rankings did not change.

Wow!
That is impressive.
Coach D is the man. Look at all that hidden yardage we have now per game.
Those starts are awesome.

Not to mention he's always one of the first ones downfield on the coverage teams. I'm just waiting for some unsuspecting fool to mistake him for a kicker and try to run him over...;)

Where do you get the average starting position stat?

That's quite a shocking number. Ten yards per drive is a significant difference.

Why are you giving Joe all this credit??? Its not like they had Buehler last year for comparison.

Wow.... those stats are really eye opening to say the least. We're averaging over 2 TB's a game, when we didn't even have one last season. This is beginning to look like a very smart draft move we made.

I calculated it based on the kickoff yards, return yard average, kicks out of bounds and touchbacks. All these numbers are provide on NFL.com. I am surprised they don't list the average starting position on there.

Good stuff. Having multiple active placekickers during games will never sway everyone's opinion, but I'm perfectly fine with it as long as Buehler continues to produce at the level he's already proven he can. He's been a great draft pick.

I have to agree. I had some doubts about having 2 place kickers on the roster but could not be happier with the results

What people don't really know yet is that he is actually a really good field goal kicker as well (just not as good as Folk). He made 78% of his Field Goals at USC.

If Folk ever gets hurt or decides he wants more money than Dallas is willing to pay, we will be just fine at kicker.

True but at USC he was not asked to kick many long FG in large part because the offense moved the ball fairly easy.

True, but he knocked em down when asked. He kicked some long one's as well.

Granted not saying he can't do it but was not tested much in terms of last second kicks at the end of games to win. USC was good enough that he was not put into those positions much at all.

I think that factored into Buehler's selection during the draft as well. The front office's foresight will pay off eventually.

Pro Bowl kickers are a wanted commodity. If he continues kicking at a high level, it would make good business sense for Folk to test the free agent market waters.

Not only is he a kicker, but he plays special teams on punts.

Those aren't correct. Last year, our opponents' average starting line after kickoffs was the 29.3, which ranked 29th. This year, it's the 21.8, which ranks third.
