I was about to ask whether you meant kicker or punter, then I finally remembered Janikowski. Brain fart.craig71;3042545 said:And Al spent a first round pick on kicker once upon a time too.The 17th overall pick at that.

I've always felt that it's a crying shame that Guy hasn't made it into the Hall. He's been eligible since the early 90's. Crazy.craig71;3042602 said:I forgot about Ray Guy. 1st. round 23rd pick overall.
So Al has taken both a punter and a kicker in the 1st. round.

I am not complaining, but that % is a little below his predicted output. I didn't think there was any way he could put 60% or better back there, but he may actually climb that number the way he is kicking off.joseephuss;3042392 said:Plus Coach Joe DeCamillis deserves some credit, too.
These are the big stats for the kickoff coverage team.
13 touchbacks ranks 1st
(ranked 32nd in 2008)
37.1% of kickoffs that are touchbacks ranks 4th
(ranked 32nd in 2008)
68.1 yards average kickoff ranks 6th
(ranked 31st in 2008)
20.9 yards per kick that is returned ranks 6th
(ranked 6th in 2008)
21.76 yard line is opponents average starting field position from either returns, touchbacks and kicks out of bounds ranks 2nd
(31.00 yard line ranked 31st in 2008) I had to edit these two numbers. Messed up my calcs just a little, but the rankings did not change.
I was looking at some other kickers stats and I hadn't ever noticed that Carolina has a kick off specialist with 24 TBs on the season. Every 3rd kick is a TB.
Thats pretty awesome for them. I know you would have to use a spot for a guy like that but hell I'd take a TB every game.
His KOs on average land at the 2-3 yard line and with a return average of 22, when teams do get a chance to take a KO, they usually start at the 25.
Folk usually hits the 10 and with an identical return average, opponents of Dallas usually start at the 32-33.
When you factor in that guys TBs as average starting position, the other teams usually starts at the 23. Just about 10 yards difference and with 5 kicks per game, were looking at half the field this guy adding on.
Using a roster spot on a KO specialists isn't the ideal thing to do but when you can get that kind of production from the guy, its almost foolish not to. There is always a player on the team who pretty much stands around all game on the sidelines anyway.
Hell, I'd shuttle Carpenter out in a heartbeat if you could get me a leg that would add tilt field position 50 yards in my favor.

Bleu Star;3042879 said:Buehler and DeCamillis are the MVPs thus far IMO. They've taken an area of grave disappointment in recent years and made it into an area of strength, Joe D really has a knack for getting the most out of his guys. Gotta love a coach with that quality. I bet a lot of those guys playing STs would run through a brick wall for Coach D.

maxdallasfan;3042918 said:IMO, getting Buehler was genius. How many times last year did this team take the lead, only to kick it off, and have the opponent return it to the 35? Countless times.
I wish I knew the actual numbers, but I thiink the chance of scoring once you get to the 20, 25, 30 and 35 increases dramatically.
