The Cap: how it has changed the league (and should change Garrett)

Yes but Jags added Foles as well which would fall into my “ combination therof”.

I stand by my opinion that talent is a better solution or combination Therof. Coaching of course helps if the talent is there.
Both. By a landslide!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today’s NFL is completely different than it was when we last won a Super Bowl in the 1995 season. Back then, the salary cap had just been instituted and it would have a profound effect on the league in several key ways:
  • How teams acquired, developed and maintained its talent changed dramatically.
  • It also leveled the playing field in talent matchups between teams. It became much harder to stockpile talent with depth like the Cowboys did back in the early 90s.
  • Because the talent gaps are smaller in today’s game, the role of creativity and scheme became much more important than just winning by brute physical advantages.
  • And finally, this led to critical importance of having a head coach and staff that can BE CREATIVE AND ADAPT TO CHANGING CIRCUMSTANCES QUICKLY- both in games and in season. Quite simply, having a creative HC has become more critical than ever before.
So, the importance of having creative and adaptive schemes on both sides of the ball have become a must if your team is to win in the regular season and to qualify for the playoffs. And, once in the playoffs, your team's ability to be creative and adaptive is even more critical.

Improving this team’s ability to be more creative and adaptive may be the biggest key to finally having a deep playoff run we haven’t seen since the salary cap was installed.

Unfortunately, despite some strengths exhibited in acquiring talent and getting his teams ready to consistently play hard, Jason Garrett runs this team like a 1965 Vince Lombardi packers team. “Here is what we do, we’re going to do it over and over, because that’s what we do, and we are going to out physical you with it”. The problem is, that theory doesn’t work so often in today’s NFL.

Jason Garrett does several things well as previously stated. But his inability to be creative and adapt is an absolute killer in the playoffs. Which is where coaching matters most.

If Garrett doesn’t correct this bad habit, he will continue to be a decent regular season coach who struggles to win in the playoffs. My hope is that the addition of Kellen Moore will add some creativity to our offensive schemes and influence some of the habits and practices of our head coach.

Surely this season is Garrett’s last chance to prove he can be that kind of coach.

Shorter: In a league with a salary cap, your coaches matter more. Which is bad news for us.

That’s not my point. My point is coaches like Belichick can get the best out of their role players, which augment Brady and any other outstanding players they have.

The pats are rarely the “most talented” team in the playoffs, but they are most often the “best coached” team in the playoffs. Great coaches maximize the talent of ALL their players. Not just their stars. I’m not talking about players elevating others. I’m talking about coaches elevating all their players to make a great team- not just the Stars.
I understand and agree to a point. You don’t need the best overall talent if you have the most talent in key positions who can elevate lesser talent around them.

This is what these Elite QB’s do. Yes they need a supporting cast as well but it’s what they do with it that separates the great ones.

We’ve seen what having an Elite RB and WR does for us elevating our QB. Imagine what a QB with that talent would do for our offense and this coaching staff.

We know an Elite HC and coaching staff isn’t a priority with Jerry. I’m not sure why we expect to have more success without an Elite QB either?

Right and why having Elite talent on most key positions is so critical.

We’ve seen how having an Elite OL has elevated our running game and with a talented RB we have the leagues leading rusher. Why wouldn’t we want similar talent at QB so we could have a league leading passer and top offense in the league which would elevate our chances of winning a championship.

This is all I’m saying . I’m not bashing Dak. I just think we’ve settled for less than we should. And it’s going to be tougher to reach our goals especially with this organization and coaching staff.

The game’s still about the players. Free agency just makes it harder to acquire enough of them fast enough to keep them so you can win enough for it to pay off. It put the emphasis on selection and development.

Which is why we’ve had a better team the last five seasons than most of the rest of the league.

I don't imagine that. Why? Becaue elite QB's are almost impossible to find. There's only maybe 3-5 in the NFL at any given time. So, what's the point of continuously bemoaning the fact that we don't have one?

Hey, point me out the next Brady or PManning or Luck that's available to us, and I'm all over it!!!!!

Greg, that type Qb is simply not readily available. You can ask that question all day, now outline your plan for us to get one.

I really think it’s time for Garrett to receive his accolades for his coexistence within what was one of the most dysfunctional organizations the NFL has seen.

His coaching as all coaches deserve criticism but the direction this front office and organization has steered under his leadership has turned almost into a normal situation so much we are beginning to believe Jerry isn’t in as much control or making all of the decisions anymore which we know isn’t true.

No one expected anyone to have much success with Jerrys ways. One of the greatest HOF coaches didn’t have any more success. One of the greatest DC of this era didn’t have anymore success.

And Garrett’s retooled this team over twice in 8 years without a HOF caliber 1st round talented QB or #1 defense. I’ve been supported of him ever since the night he took over in the Meadowlands in 2010 and still believe it’s more than we could have hoped for within Jerry’s ways.

I’m still believing this is probably as good as it gets within Jerry’s ways and continue to be thankful to Jerry regardless of what’s driving the Football Idiot to continue supporting Garrett. I’m no less convinced I’m still on the right side of history despite if we ever win a championship with Garrett for I was tiring of the continuing revolving door of puppets.

Thanks Jason for making being a Cowboy fan a little more enjoyable and for sticking with this old fool boss thru thick and thin. If we do win one with you it might be the greatest championship yet. Go Cowboys!!
I've been pretty down on Garrett. But, I feel everything you just said. Great argument.

Jason stays.

The roster is finally starting to be stacked everywhere.

The biggest weakness last year got flipped to what could be one of the better wr groups in the league.

The lb crew was playing tag team injury’s every game for years, and now a healthy Sean lee might not see the field.

The dline has really good depth. Playing time is up for grabs in a good way.

Dak has some really good experience against big qb’s, in big games, and in big moments.

Let him coach. Don’t rock the boat.

Tannehill should be included in that group ,but I agree with you that Dak has far superior leadership qualities.
That conversation started because he was pointing out that Linehan has had "success" in the NFL. I was pointing out that his successes had more to do with having Randy Moss and Calvin Johnson in their prime, than his scheme or the QBs on those teams.

Roger that brother,, I read it loud and clear...

We complain about wanting a greater HC, OC, and other positions and pieces . Not sure why QB is off limits?

The point is it makes it tougher without one. If we’re truly evaluating and offering analysis then even if we accept he’s our guy it should still be within the realm to offer the criticism as a factor in these discussions.

Thanks. I think there’s more that are appreciative of Garrett’s contributions and style considering the situation. But don’t want to be in the crossfire of the very vocal Lynch Mob.

We’d all love to have another Jimmy or a Belichick but surely we’ve come to realize the reality of our circumstance with Jerry.

Absolutely. However, there's no salary cap and no draft for HC's and OC's. Colleges are littered w/ coaching prospects, and it's easy to just go get one and give him a shot.

Qb's are a complete different story. Everyone wants one, so the competition to get a good one is fierce. So, you're much better off hoping the guy you got is good enough, and keep on drafting the Mike White types in hopes that one will work out. It's not off limits to want a better QB, it's just that good ones are simply not out there for the taking. You have to draft them, generally very high, which means you better have a top 10 or so pick in the draft. The Mahomes types who are there in the 2nd are rare.

I agree, and even if you draft one very high and he plays like it, it doesn’t mean anything.

It took Payton a long time playing top notch to get a ring.

Foles got a ring on a hot streak, and his career has not been top of the draft style

Great post Bob !
I dont think JG is capable of being innovative or creative, so good luck with him changing.
And Jerry already said he wants to win JG a SB.
So no telling how this all plays out, but the circus keeps on rolling.

Seems to me that Kellen Moore has his work cut out for him! He'll be obliged to correct so many things that are wrong with this team that even Jesus Christ, himself, would be hard pressed to get 'em to the SB. Besides, JG is still doing on-the-job training and "it's a process." Good luck, Kellen! :D
