Disgruntled Cardinals Boldin, Dockett sit out first day of minicamp

Associated Press

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Wide receiver Anquan Boldin and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett showed up for the start of Arizona Cardinals minicamp Friday, but both players begged out of workouts because they said they are injured.

Boldin and Dockett are upset about their contracts, and both said they had injured hamstrings, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

"They showed up last night and reported an injury that we weren't aware of," Whisenhunt said, "so as part of our procedure, we sent them for MRIs. Hey, we know what's going on, so I'm really not going to have much to say about that."

Two other players with unsettled contract issues -- linebacker Karlos Dansby and safety Adrian Wilson -- participated in Friday's first workout, although Dansby was late because of what he said was a mixup over what time the practice started.

Boldin and Dockett were on the field for the second workout Friday, but they didn't practice. Afterward, Boldin was vague in his responses but said his stance hadn't changed since he asked to be traded nearly a year ago.

"Honestly, it's out of my hands what's going to be done," he said. "This whole process has gone on long enough. I think it's safe to say a lot of people are tired of it, myself included. So, hopefully something will get done sooner rather than later."

Asked if he had given up hope of being traded, Boldin said: "I never give up hope. I'm optimistic about everything. Like I said, we'll see what happens."

Boldin laughed when asked if he was making a point by sitting out the minicamp.

"I'm not making a point," Boldin said. "I'm just not able to go right now."

As for whether he would show up for training camp this summer if he didn't have a new contract by then, Boldin said: "We'll see what happens. It's too early to say what I will or won't do."

Boldin, a three-time Pro Bowl pick in his six NFL seasons, had been the subject of widespread trade rumors after the Cardinals said they would listen to offers. But no deal has been made, and the team insists it wants to re-sign Boldin once contracts issues with Dansby and Wilson are resolved.

Boldin seemed to question whether the Cardinals were serious about being receptive to trade proposals.

"They came out and said what they had to say," he said. "... Do you believe it? Enough said."

It was the first day of practice for the NFC champion Cardinals since their dramatic loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII.

Quarterback Kurt Warner, who received a two-year, $23 million contract -- with $15 million guaranteed -- in the offseason, said he understands the team's salary-cap limits, but he has been outspoken in how important he believes it is to keep Boldin.

"I've been in contact with Anquan the whole offseason," Warner said. "My whole goal is to let him know how important he is to me and to this organization. ... Every moment that goes past that it looks like he's going to be here longer is a definite good moment for me and, I think, this organization."

Warner offered a case for addressing Boldin soon.

"The thing I look at with Anquan is that he's been here to build this thing from Day 1," Warner said. "He was here when there wasn't a lot of pieces around him, and he put in the work, he busted his butt, he was a leader on this football team. Sometimes you have to reward guys not always for what you know you're going to get, but what they've committed to your team and what he brings to the table off the field."

Warner continued: "He's one of the best in the business. He makes our football team better, he makes me better, he makes Larry (Fitzgerald) better. We're not the same football team, I'm not the same player, without Anquan Boldin."

Boldin has two years left on a four-year, $22.25 million contract. Dockett has three years left on his contract, and although he wants a new one, the Cardinals have shown little interest in addressing his case at least until after talks with Dansby, Wilson and Boldin are resolved.

Arizona has about $6.5 million left under the salary cap.

Dansby, who received the franchise tag for the second year in a row, said he gave no thought to holding out from minicamp.

"I'm bigger than that, man," Dansby said. "I can't let that hold me back from just being with the team and making things work."

Wilson, the Cardinals' defensive leader who has one year left on his contract, said he wasn't concerned about his situation.

"We're not pushing it," he said. "We've got all summer, pretty much all year, so it's not like we need to get something done right away."

Meanwhile, Arizona signed offensive guard Carlton Medder, who was with the team in training camp last year before being released in August. He was out of football last season.

Three players -- offensive tackle Oliver Ross, tight end Dominique Byrd and linebacker Ryan Wallace -- are participating in Cardinals minicamp as unsigned tryouts.

can't afford either, move on.

Actually, I'm not sure we can afford NOT to sign a vet FA. Boldin would solve our WR tandem for the next 4-6 years.

I think the best thing to do is to just let it go. We arn't getting Boldin. He wants 10 mil a year and he's getting up in age. His history says he'll also miss 4-5 games a year.

The idea of adding Boldin is interesting though I doubt it happens. Not comparing the two in any way, but I got a feeling that Miles Austin will be a nice suprise for us this season.

With the talent we have on offense, why would you want to force the ball to two WR's like we would have to do if we had Boldin. He's not coming here to be a decoy.

The talent is plenty on offense. We need to spread it around.

I can't see how anyone thinks we can afford to have two WR's making that kind of cash at one time. Boldin wants a deal paying him 10 Million per year and that would go along with the 7 or 8 million per year we'd already be giving Roy.

It's not happening.

I can't understand why people can see the benefit of having two very good WR's.
All the arguements against it are weak at best.

1) "Can't have too much money tied up in one position". Well it's not one position, it's two. We will employ at least two WR's for 95% or more of our offensives snaps. I don't care how good our #1 WR, our TE or our RB are. Doesn't matter because we're still playing with 2 to 3 WR's on every play.

2) "Only so many balls to go around" That's right thier are. But there's still plenty for 2 quality WR's. The Colts had plenty for Harrison and Wayne for years. Plenty of other examples I could site.

Too bad we have TO's contract on the books this year or we might be able to fidget things around to make it work.

What part of No Way.... No How!!!!!

Talk about something else cause this isn't going to happen. He is getting a little long in the tooth and his knees are starting to go. Why not take a shot and see what the youngsters can do this year. We might actually find a starter in this bunch. If we don't make the playoffs this year, there is going to be a massive change in the coaches for next year and we might restructure the entire offense and defense. Just like Parcells, there might be wholesale changes in the roster to get the "right" players for the next scheme.

Be Patient.... Be Happy!!!!!!:)

If it was so important to have 2 elite receivers, and pay them that kind of money, to win in this league then there are two things to consider here...

1) We'd have never let Owens go if that was the case. We had a top flight receiver to put out there with Roy, and pay big money to while doing it, and apparently this team doesn't beleive you have to have two elite receivers in order to win.

I guess having Fitz and Boldin did a great job of winning the Superbowl for the Cards last year. Oh, wait, that didn't happen. The team with two receivers, neither of whom are necassarily elite, but are high quality playmakers, was the one who won the game.

2) If you have to have two, or it's so much easier to win Superbowls with 2, then how come more teams out there aren't looking to do that? How come the Colts and the Cards are the only two teams out there who had two elite WR's on their roster at the same time, paying them both big money at once?

What other team out there has two elite WR's of the caliber of Boldin, or better, that you can cite? There's Boldin and Fitz and there WAS Reggie and Harrison.

And the other duo would be?

Moss and Welker? Hardly. Welker isn't even in the discussion of elite receivers. Oh and when the Patriots had Moss, Welker, and Dante to throw the ball around the park 40 times a game that worked out super great for them when they played the Giants, a team with 1 elite receiver and no elite TE, didn't it?

You don't need two elite WR's on the field at one time to win. It's not necassary and there are PLENTY MORE examples of teams winning without that than there are with teams winning with it. The Cowboys of the 90's had 3 prime examples of teams that didn't need 2 elite WR's to win Superbowls.

This team needs more balance, better play calling, high quality offensive line play, from start of the season to the end, and great defensive play to win games this year.

It doesn't need Boldin out there to get it done.

Personally, I have lost a great deal of respect for Boldin. I don't like the way he's handling his business, holding the entire team up...it's not like he's a free agent. DWare could be skipping practice as well. Boldin is the property of the Arizona Cardinals...he should be participating, not trying to force them to trade him.

I'd love to see him end up with a pathetic team that never makes it on national TV...he can take the 10 million a year he wants and enjoy it in obscurity.

I have no interest in trading for him, whatsoever. We'd be foolish to give up a first and third rounder for him.

True, heck Ellis may have whined out of insecurity but he never sat out and yet looking at many posts some want him gone yet would take Boldin? :laugh2:

I don't think there is any chance Boldin comes to Dallas, but it is tempting. I just don't trust anyone from this group.
