The Clock

I never thought about it until Chris Collinsworth mentioned it during Sunday's game. He was talking about the Cowboys and the clock and why Romo is constantly getting the ball and trying to beat the clock. The Cowboys got a few delay of game penalities during the game. Why can't the Cowboys get to to the line and hike the ball. I understanding burning the clock at the end of the game but why in the third quarter. Why can't Jason Garrett get them to the line and run the play.

There was problems with the headsets this past game but we routinely seem to snap the ball with 1or2sec on the clock...This has to be a great advantage for the defense as far as getting a jump on the snap.

They typically call two plays. One is the planned play, the other is the "kill" play, or audible. I'm sure that takes more time in the huddle. Also, in the past, our OL hasn't been that smart. This year, they're inexperienced. So I think Romo is giving them time to make their reads and calls, and it gives Romo more time to read the defense.

You could argue that it gives the defense the advantage of being able to jump the snap. But it could also be argued that it tests the defense's patience, and if they show their hand too early, then Romo can tell where the pressure is coming from, or where the coverage is going.

I was wondering the same thing while watching Brady the other night because I noticed the clock often times had over 15 seconds when he came to the line.

I believe someone posted the reason was so the defense had to commit making it easier for Romo to read the defense which seems to make sense.

I'm still curious what the benefit is to one over the other (lots of time vs little time).

Yup, Rex Ryan has said before that when QB’s did this it was easier to disguise their blitz and could time it better. The Cowboys offense needs to have a better tempo in future games. Wear out a defense by not giving them time to rest or prepare pre-snap.

Advantage defense in the case of running the clock down. Romo has a history of running the clock down to nearly zero before snapping. It has always driven me crazy. I think he gets too cute with his checkdowns, and I don't think Garrett is the issue in this case.

Bill Belichick just got on Brady for not doing quick counts and making too many pre-snap adjustments, lol. Football Life on NFLN.

The headsets seemed to malfunction on drives when the boys crossed into the jets side of the field and on third down.

Were not the Jets jumping in and out of diff. def pakages and in and out of diff blitz looks forceing Romo to try and change up also........

......doesnt Garretts offense require diff hot receivers to recognize when they are hot depending on blitz at the snap....

or is Garrett insulting them from that read and putting it all on Romo's back ?
If so teams will do this all season long....

I think this is the way Jason Garrett likes to run his offense, and we will not see a change in it anytime soon. I'm convinced it's entirely intentional.
Maybe part of it is squeezing every possible second of rest for our defense.

If the Offensive scheme doesn't take full advantage of the opposing Defense, then the Dallas Defense will be on the field.

Meh, what does Bill Belichick know about football?

I think its intentional and not on Romo, but is something teached by Garrett. The Cowboys are running the play clock down in the first quarter.

We have done this for years now. This is far from the first time this issue has been raised on this board, often to the utter consternation of those raising it.

Like most have said, the Cowboys have been running the clock down as low as possible before the ball is snapped beginning as far back as when Parcells was here. But Sunday night was the first time I recall when we have been called for delays more then once. Can't help thinking Romo was calling out the blocking assignments for the OL. With so many rookies starting on the OL and in their first regular season game, just assumed it taking longer then necessary to avoid major OL confusion.

yep we've been doing it since Red became OC.

Yea, this has been going on for a long time and it needs to stop. There is more harm done than good. Way too many delay of game penalties. I also think it causes more confusion with the younger players with where to set up, who to block, etc.

Yep. Seems like they have been struggling to get off plays for years now. Frustrating.

What evidence has convinced you of that?
