A lot of this I won't argue with. I think they're a lot more leery these days about picking guys they haven't talked to/done full due diligence on, and that's probably a good thing. I also agree that it's reasonable to go after somebody you really want, if (a) you have reason to trust that your talent evaluators are very good and (b) if the price isn't too ridiculous. I also think that it's no big deal to get a little less than normal value on trades down, because accumulating picks is very good, particularly (again) if you have good talent evaluators.

But there are a couple things I disagree with. The issue I have with the Lawrence trade is that #47 and #78 are not approximately the same as #34. It was an overpayment by the traditional value chart and a bad overpayment by more sophisticated measures. In answer to your question, absolutely I'd trade down from 34 to 47 and 78 unless there was a great value sitting there at 34. And I don't believe the Cowboys or anyone else saw Lawrence as a tremendous value at 34. Could I be wrong? Sure. We'll see.
IIRC those picks were equal to #30 by the old chart, but by some newer charts is right at eqaul or better.

He made that decision after the draft. He felt he wasn't getting a real chance. I'd prefer he competed but the writing was on the wall.

Well, they were absolutely intending to give him the shaft before the draft. I'm not saying I particularly blame him. Just that, if they knew they were going to get rid of him, they did need to get a guy in there to replace him. Unless they were going to roll with a rookie that next season.

After the initial shock of passing up on Floyd wore off I was ecstatic over the Fredrick selection. I knew exactly what kind of player we were getting and the Terrence Williams pick was icing on the cake.

By the old chart, 47 + 78 = 630, 37 = 530. Fair value for 47 + 78 is right in between 29 and 30.

By the Harvard chart (one of the new ones based on actual historical value gained), 47 + 78 = 266, 37 = 168. Fair value for 47 + 78 is the 15th overall pick. That's not quite fair, because under that approach, you should pay a premium to move up (one great player is worth more than two half-as-good players), but it still comes out looking pretty bad.

For the same reason, the newer chart liked the trade down for Fred/Williams.

Pretending they aren't the problem makes you look blind.

I am amazed that people think that the Cowboy fans who are unhappy with the team are 1) happy when we fail and 2) like the team less than you do. It's a little lie you tell yourself to cope I guess. I like to discuss things that are going well (Romo, Rolando McClain, the O LIne, Murray, Dez) and point out the things that I see as a problem (Garrett, the lack of talent on defense, Jerry Jones). I'll continue to live in reality and you guys keep pretending the NFL hands out participation ribbons in February.

Don't see anyone pretending they aren't a problem. The problem is some pretend almost everything is a problem when often it isn't as big a deal as they think. Many realists here had Kosier, Gurode, Free, Murray, Romo, and Garrett as a problem before it wasn't a problem. Then they pretend it was that way all along. We've all heard Jerry is the Debbil long enough. We know his faults and we don't need to be reminded of them on a daily basis.....ad nauseum.

You've never heard me NOT say the FO created a huge mess for us with the cap which DOES affect who we sign and retain or that Jerry WAS NOT problematic at times. But I also see them making good moves esp lately.

I say at times because like most things in the universe much is shaded grey and not just black or white.

I'd rather have a two pretty good players right now than one pretty good player. We needed the player and we got him and another. So the charts are guidelines not universal laws of physics. I did like your post as I do many though.

1)Never said they weren't a big part of our shortcomings as a team 2)I just said those who constantly blame them even when they make a good pick and somehow then blame that good decision on luck look makes you look bad.3) if you like discussing things that are going well then when something is brought up good then don't turn it into something bad. Like the good trade down move to get Frederick.
