The Cowboys' evaluation of the 2015 season takes months to complete

http://espn.go.com/blog/jacksonvill...wing-cowboys-secondary-coach-jerome-henderson (second article)

IRVING, Texas -- Whether the Cowboys go 12-4 as they did in 2014, or 4-12 as they did in 2015, Jason Garrett said the evaluation process remains the same.

Garrett said the coaching staff will do an in-depth study of every player on every play in a quest to get answers for where this season went awry beyond the obvious.

“We have to pull back and evaluate our offense, our defense and our special teams and see what we were good at and why we we're good at it and what we weren’t good at and why we weren’t good at it,” Garrett said recently. “You have to do a thorough evaluation of scheme, personnel and everything.

“You want to have systems that are good, comprehensive and flexible and that can attack a lot of different ways, but they’re always growing.”...

Five things the Cowboys' offense needs to fix
http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas-cowb...terrell-mcclain-can-be-valuable-cowboys-piece (second article)

...Creativity rules

The problem: Any time you ask Garrett about the Cowboys’ offense, he’ll talk about its ability to attack a defense in a lot of different ways. The Cowboys do that by having the quarterback read the defense and attack the mismatch.

The issue, of course, is when no mismatch exists. When Dez Bryant missed five games with a broken toe, the Cowboys simply couldn’t take advantage of perceived mismatches with Terrance Williams and Cole Beasley. And when Bryant returned, he caught only 31 of 72 passes thrown his way, so he didn’t take advantage of mismatches, either.

How to fix it: Instead of relying so much on their players to win one-on-one battles, Garrett and the coaching staff need to do a better job of using rub routes -- pick plays -- and bunch sets to get their receivers open if they can’t do it by themselves. The Cowboys scored 259 points -- their lowest total since 2002 -- and finished 29th in the NFL.

Touchdowns instead of field goals in the red zone

The problem: The Cowboys scored only 20 touchdowns in 45 trips inside their opponents’ 20-yard line, which tied them for 29th in the NFL. Kicking field goals instead of scoring touchdowns meant the Cowboys rarely built leads that forced their opponents to panic. The field goals also kept the Cowboys from separating from their opponents, which is among the reasons they lost seven games where they were leading or tied in the fourth quarter.

How to fix it: Romo throwing a fade to Bryant against man-to-man coverage is a great play when they’re each healthy. When injuries robbed the Cowboys of that play, Garrett and Linehan did a poor job of coming up with a different approach. They should use more play-action passes on first down since they’re such a run-heavy team. Or they should use more motion to create matchups they want to exploit. There are a lot of ways to scheme players open in the red zone but Dallas rarely, if ever, did it...

I can evaluate them in a day. Should be easy for them since they watch them every week! A months process is nonsense.

Takes months :lmao:. This is why this organization is where it is.

The talk is a play by play, coaching evaluation...that is consumption of time. That doesn't mean that a general evaluation and direction on both coaching staff and players of their own, hasn't already occured since the conclusion of the Cowboys' own season. That is usually accomplished the first two weeks, and without a ton of fanfare and drama...

but I guess that burn barrel excitements can be compelling, especially when the cheap wine gets passed around, Ripple.

Can't be that hard.
Offense. Too vanilla and no team speed
Defense. Can't apply consistent pressure and 3/4 of the secondary sucks.
Done

Take time to read the second posting in the thread...on what needs fixing in the offense.

Hey, pablum prince, take a look at what the reporter came up with on the back of an envelope - there is no reason to look beyond the obvious - this team was given no scheme advantage on the field.

Look, if you wish a conversation with this poster, clean up your own comment to poster...or leave me out of you insults. Period.

When one uses second person, an implied you, he lose discusive elements. That is then a rant...(generalized is alright)...but personal makes one trolling.

I find burn barrel huddling a poor excuse for not taking a serious look at what is presented. A lack of an organized after-action-report, is akin to just not doing one. Then a knee jerk and emotional tyrade...kind like when Ripple runs low.

Oh, and on low 3rd and 1 productions:

How to fix it: The Cowboys should draft a running back in the first three rounds, and if they get the physical one-cut runner this offense craves then that alone might spur the necessary improvement. If not, the Cowboys will need to spend training camp focusing on pad leverage and explosion and all of the detailed things that allow offensive linemen to move defensive players at the point of attack.

Quit all the squawking and look at solutions beyond looking for a sounding board...either a coach or a poster!

Sorry, wasn't referring to you - it was intended for the guy who was taking a deeper look into all three phases of the football game. I thought tha the reporter did a pretty good analytic job.

Then a humbled apology, as you are on point completely. My bad.

Hell - it'll take that long to figure out what kind of angles Wilcox was taking on missed tackles.

So what are they doing when they "watch the tape" each week ??

It kinda says JG has no idea what went wrong this season.

But at least he is going to look deeper, and he did mention scheme, and flexible, so maybe they change some
things that need changing, if he can figure it out.

Schwartz was named Philadelphia's defensive coordinator on Tuesday.......... that will be trouble for Dallas in 2016.
Philly could be a good team next season.

Garrett is smart, but he's not football smart. Problem is, there are football brilliant coaches out there we're competing with, and that is what we should be aiming for, but we're insisting on letting him grow, and it's holding us back.
