The Cowboys Next Move Feels Like a George Pickens Extension

This is a cop out excuse. Want other factors could come into play as to why. Maybe the defense played better to help out the offense. As to where the 2025 defense gave ZERO help.
Opponents and their defenses and even offenses also a factor.

This is the equivalent to saying the 1991 Washington team that won the SB were favorites to repeat in 1992. But injuries derailed them and they missed the playoffs. And we know who won in 1992
Wouldn’t that apply to nearly every? There’s three phases to the game that compliment each other. Then you have different coaches. There are so many factors to consider besides that one. And the main one, we don’t have Pickens, we had Cooks I like Cooks but he was pretty much over the hill or we didn’t know how to use him correctly. You know, the #2 receiver with 657 yards.

various: GP is a top 10 WR with top 5 upside and lots of character risk. He clashed big time with Pittsburgh and as stable a coaching staff as exists in the league.
BUT, top 5 upside is tantalizing, and people get paid a lot of money to maximize guys like GP.

His value is not minimized except by teams who are scared of him and those teams wouldn't win any bidding wars.

Dallas should require a bare minimum of a 1st round pick and a 4th. They should start by asking for a 1st and 2nd this year.

None have done that because they can't lol

You can blather on all you want but you misunderstanding the context.
Actually they can you can make all the offers you want I can make you an offer right now in your house or your car even though it's not listed you can make whatever offers you want because it does not have to be submitted as a contract it's an offer and Cowboys can simply reject it or they can listen there's been none you can blather on all you want because I'm saying you're wrong teams can offer what they want the Cowboys have a right to accept it and then bring it to George or decline it..

The fact that you don't get that that's very clear that just because the franchise tag is unsigned or the franchise tag win sign has stipulations and restrictions it doesn't mean the Cowboys can't take less So that means offers can be made they just don't have to be accepted but the fact is no one's even trying to make one even though yes it is legal to make offers i've already researched this even when you haven't signed the tag you can seek trade offers..

You like me to go find that for you I mean I could find that for you again because we've already discussed this to death all all offseason it's there in black and white even players not under contract technically they have not signed or tagged can still receive trade offers and they don't have to be to first that's a fact LOU!

go look it up you're the one who's wrong..

He can’t be traded until he signs the tag. Teams can make trade offers, but Dallas doesn’t have the rights to trade him right now because he’s in limbo. That’s the point, if he doesn’t think he can get his money here, why not sign the tag, make his demands clear, and let teams start bidding? He’s holding up the process, and his agent is once again playing games.

This is the perfect time for him to sign the tag, find out which teams want him, and set his value. I think he knows he doesn’t want to face the truth because, so far, there hasn’t been a single offer of any kind. Offers don’t have to match the tag terms, Dallas can reject anything less than 2 1sts, but teams could still try with less draft capital to see if the Cowboys would consider it.

None of that has happened, which says a lot about how the league views George Pickens right now. That could change in the future, but at the moment, no one is making a move.
Not true:
Pickens is on the non‑exclusive franchise tag, Dallas is allowed to trade him if they choose. They can also match any offer sheet another team might give him, or decline and receive two first‑round picks as compensation

If he signs the tag then they cannot trade him.

You fully have lost this argument because there's a difference between an actual trade or signing a contract but under the rights of the NFL tag he may not be able to be traded but he can seek offers the Cowboys can listen to offers no offers have been made and you're wrong 100 percent of the time in this argument..

Printed this before he can seek a trade he can listen to trade offers and the Cowboys can also listen to trade offers they just wouldn't be able to get it approved until the tag is signed and both sides agree and they meet all criteria but the Cowboys can take less than two firsts but no offers for less than two firsts have been made and you can keep trying to pound this in the ground and you're very wrong they can have offers they can still talk about a trade there is no restriction on that There is tampering. Right now that's over with..

Players offered a franchise tag who have not signed it cannot be traded because they are not under an active contract. While they can receive trade interest, they must sign the tender to be traded, often enabling "sign-and-trade" scenarios, or, if tagged non-exclusively, negotiate with other teams.

Key rules regarding unsigned franchise tag players:
  • No Contract, No Trade: Because a tagged player hasn't signed, they are technically not on the roster, making an official trade impossible without them signing first.
  • Sign-and-Trade/Leverage: Players often hold out signing to leverage a trade, but they must sign the tag for a team to ship them elsewhere.
  • Non-Exclusive Tag Rights: If given the non-exclusive tag, the player can negotiate with other teams, but the original team can match the offer or receive two first-round picks.
  • Deadlines: Players have until July 15 (or the nearest business day) to negotiate a long-term deal; otherwise, they must sign the one-year tender by Week 10 to play that season.
  • Transition Tag Difference: Unlike the franchise tag, a player under the transition tag can be traded.

Oh they cannot He has to sign the tag to be traded look you all just make me have to keep being redundant both of you are wrong and right some of what you said makes sense but it doesn't until he signs it they can't trade him..

They could come up with a deal and then he can do a sign and trade..

Dude you have it backwards If he signs the tag the trade is still there it's only way he can be traded is if he agrees to the tag...

Need to stop telling me I'm wrong when I have facts to back it You all both are wrong you and Lou are wrong here's the actual law..

just to be clear: this is all legal but in reality any team trading for GP will have talked to his agent and agreed to contract parameters. He would be traded on the tag then signed after the trade.
Dallas would free up the entire FT hold money on the cap, collect their trade assets and walk away.
They are not signing him first to then trade him while eating his protrated Signing Bonus.

Not correct…the only way he can be traded is if he signed the tag Otherwise he would only move through an offer sheet requiring two 1st round picks and no team is going to do that.

You are wrong that signing the tag means he can’t be traded. AI is not always your friend.

Every year is different now days. We seen it all too often. A SB team can miss the playoffs. A top 10 pick team can make it to the SB.
And it is for various reasons. Injuries, lose too many players in FA, and do not replace them. Get very lucky in. the draft. Or those few years of draft picks and low key FA finally come together. The new HC finally gets his team together and sneaks up on the NFL.

Your AI is wrong. Dallas can’t trade him unless he signs the tag. When he signs the tag, then they can trade him. After July 15 he can no longer be traded, whether Pickens signs it or not.

Watch AI. Need to be pretty specific in what you ask. You can get a variety of answers.
A friend told me AI gave him an answer to an Engineering question. I told him it does not make any sense. And told him why. He ask AI the question differently. And got the more correct answer.

I told this to a few friends in a bar as they asked AI a question. They did not believe me. They asked it a different way and got a different answer.

Sure, they could offer a 5th for Pat Mahomes too.

You're just dense about the definition of "can't."

Teams aren't going to offer trades before negotiating with Pickens because they won't take on the risk of long-term contract uncertainty. Dallas isn't going to accept anything less than two firsts right now because the tag sets the offer sheet price. Legally, other teams can offer whatever they want. Functionally, they can't.

When you hear about a player being traded on the franchise tag, it follows a very specific sequence:

  1. Agreement in Principle: The original team finds a trade partner and they agree on the draft pick compensation.
  2. The New Deal: The player’s agent usually negotiates a new long-term contract with the receiving team.
  3. The Signature: To make the deal legal, the player signs the franchise tender with their original team. This instantly puts them under a one-year contract.

  4. The Execution: Once signed, the original team officially trades the player (and that one-year contract) to the new team, who then usually rips it up and signs the player to the pre-negotiated long-term extension.

So yes, the player must sign before the trade can be finalized. But the team can negotiate and execute that trade and often do, before then. GP can only refuse to sign for so long before the option of any extension is off the table (mid-July I believe this year).
The non-exclusive portion of the tag opens up all parties to agree where then all agree and sign off or all walk away with just the tag.

The signing early portion prevents Dallas from rescinding the offer. This isn't a massive risk but late in free agency doing so to free up cap space while recouping a R3 pick when he signs elsewhere isn't unthinkable if he has a major injury or off field issue. GP can lock in the 28M for sure by signing now. Not doing so is merely a suggestion of not liking the dela and wanting to get extended before committing to the team, i.e. likely holding out all camp and possibly weeks 1-2.

They can negotiate the trade parameters but they can’t execute.

As far as GP refusing to sign, he would only refuse to sign if he doesn’t like the deal, whether it’s because of money or other factors. The Texans tried to trade Clowney to Miami but he wouldn’t sign the tag because he didn’t want to play for them.

Signing early would be incredibly dumb on any players part. Pickens isn’t concerned about the tag being rescinded because he would become a FA…that is his dream scenario. The tag is protection for the team, not Pickens.

thank you for making my point.
That doesnt make your point.

Having a high powered offense with Pickens on it and the same if not a worse defense than last year is going to be more of the same, they arent in win now mode and signing Pickens isnt a win now move.

We have gone the high powered offense route multiple times. Our defense has shown up and the offense hasnt.

How does that prove your point?

I’ve experienced this from time to time. Most recently while doing my income taxes. Asked the same question but in two slightly different ways and got completely opposite answers.

you are nuts. In three years from now half the roster will be different. There is no LONG term in th enfl.

If they want to be in win now they better add more talent next offseason. This offseason wasn't very good imo
