This may sound crazy but there is a parallel here.
BTW, I am not a Red Sox fan.

The Red Sox had a whole bunch of young talent and were so close to getting to the world series.
But yet they did not quite get there.

What did they do?
They got David Price after 2015 season, an ace pitcher.
How did he do - not well.

So what did they do after that after the 2016 season?
They doubled down.
They traded for another Ace pitcher with a 3 year contract.
Now they have a 3 year window in which they are a predominant favorite to win it all.

Price wasn't bad.

Really the comparison is pretty bad. The RS traded away their farm for Kimbrel, Sale and a few others. Baseball also has long periods of player control through their antitrust exemption that the NFL just does not have. Betts, Bradley, EdRo, Benintendi, Bogaerts, etc are 25 or less and still under team control for 4+ years.

The analog would be to trade away draft picks for star players but the salary cap and limited team control prevent stocking young talent under team control to get away with it. Jones tried that in the mid to late 90s and even in 95's last title the team was paper thin.

People are mad and looking for a scapegoat but we do not need to start doing something different during the offseason. The team needs to be prudent looking for cost efficient contracts in FA, use the entire cap, and continue to draft well. We do that and we will be regulars in the playoffs.

Remember Dak is going to get better significantly over the next 3 years like every other QB. That is the driving force here.

Dave Dombrowski is the RS GM and Epstein has not been there for half a decade. Ben Cherrington built the last team to win a title.

Epstein signed Carl Crawford to one of the worst contracts in MLB history before he left. I get what he did in Chicago but his sustain is not good.
