If you really want to know what the Cowboys plan is for 2024, just look at the recent rookie classes from the last few seasons. The Cowboys are committed to build from within. Don't discount the Cowboys intentions to replace departed players by promoting recently drafted players. I realize many are disappointed in the performance of last year's rookie crop - especially after the 2022 rookie class produced 6 starters, and 3 more rookies who could get promoted in 2024. But it's way too early to thrown in the towel on the class of 2024. We might see 3 players from the rookie class of 2023 become starters in 2024, which is more than the class of 2021 produced.

* starters
^ likely to get promoted in 2024

Rookies from 2020
  • *WR CeeDee Lamb - will be signed to a big contract extension
  • *CB Trevon Diggs - already signed to a big contract extension
  • *OT Terence Steele - already signed to a big contract extension
  • ^RB - Rico Dowdle - re-signed with Cowboys - could replace Pollard as starter if they don't draft another RB
  • TE Sean McKeon - journeyman backup TE who re-signs with Cowboys annually.
  • *C Tyler Biadasz - starter who left Cowboys in offseaon - must be replaced
  • DT Neville Gallimore - low impact back-up player who left Cowboys in offseason
Rookies from 2021
  • *LB Micah Parsons - will be re-signed to big contract extension
  • *DT Osa Odighizuwa - likely to be resigned to a contract extension during the season
  • DE Chauncey Golston - rotational Defensive Lineman will continue in role
  • CB Nahshon Wright - rotational backup cornerback and key special teams contributor
  • OL Josh Ball - often injured player was playing well at guard last year before his injury. Last chance to earn a long-term spot for the Cowboys in 2024
  • DB Israel Mukuamu - rotational backup defensive back and key special teams contributor. Can back at free safety and nickel back.
Rookies from 2022
  • *OT/OG Tyler Smith - has started a full season at both Tackle and Guard. Gives the Cowboys tremendous flexibility when approaching 2024 draft in finding replacement for Tyron Smith
  • ^DE Sam Williams - will replace Dorance Armstrong as the key 3rd DE on the team, and rotate with DeMarcus Lawrence
  • ^WR Jalen Tolbert - likely replaces Michael Gallup as the 3rd WR behind Lamb and Cooks
  • *TE Jake Ferguson - First team TE had very good 2nd season, and will battle to keep starting spot in 2024
  • OT Matt Waletzko - Rotational backup lineman spent year on IR; the hope is he becomes the swing tackle, but must prove himself
  • *CB DaRon Bland - Pro Bowl starter in 2nd season led the NFL in interceptions and defensive touchdowns
  • *LB Damone Clark - starting linebacker for Cowboys in 2023
  • *WR/KR Kavonte Turpin - Pro Bowl level returner, with increasing workload as 4th WR on roster
  • *LB/SS Markquese Bell - unexpected starter in 2023 due to injury to DeMarvion Overshown. Likely to replace Jayron Kearse in his role on defense.
  • RB Malik Davis - spent 2023 on practice squad after being 3rd RB in 2022. Still has potential upside if given the opportunity. Must improve pass protection skills
  • FS Juanyeh Thomas - flashed at safety in 2023, key special teams contributor
  • TE Peyton Hendershot - injured and not much used in 2023, after showing promise in 2022
  • ^C Brock Hoffman - started multiple games in 2023 as injury replacement for Tyler Biadasz
Rookies from 2023
  • ^DT Mazi Smith - will replace Johnathan Hankins as the starter at DT in 2024
  • TE Luke Schoonmaker - disappointing rookie season, but high expectations from team moving into his 2nd season
  • ^LB DeMarvion Overshown - expected to start in 2024 after spending rookie year on IR
  • DL Viliami Fehoko - drafted as project to convert from DE to 3-tech DT, spent rookie season as inactive - essentially a redshirt year. Could compete at either DE or DT in 2024 - similar to Chauncey Golston's role on team.
  • OT Asim Richards - redshirt rookie season, will compete for backup offensive lineman in 2024. Could surprise at either OT or OG. Competing with Ball and Waletzko from previous drafts.
  • CB Eric Scott, Jr. - Backup CB will compete with Wright for playing time.
  • RB Deuce Vaughn - limited role in rookie season due to expand after the departure of Tony Pollard
  • WR Jalen Brooks - fills the role of 5th WR and key special teams contributor
  • ^OG TJ Bass - started multiple games in 2023 as back-up interior lineman. Being cross-trained for duty at Center. Will compete for starting position in 2024
  • FB Hunter Luepke - fullback on team, fumble likely caused loss to Dolphins during season, key special teams contributor
  • DE Tyrus Wheat - promoted at the end of the season to rotation, limited use, will compete for roster spot in 2024
  • OT Earl Bostick, Jr. - spent year on PS as priority undrafted free agent. Will compete for roster spot in 2024
  • TE John Stephens, Jr. - seemed destined to replace Hendershot on roster in 2023 until late summer injury landed him on IR. Team is high on his talent.
  • TE Princeton Fant - cousin of Seahawks Noah Fant, will compete for roster spot in 2024
The team could also re-sign La-el Collins to compete at either the Left Guard spot, or as the swing tackle.

Nice work. Covers a lot of ground.
The success or failure of 2023 draft class will have a big impact on 2024 cowboys

Nice work. Sure would be nice to have that 4th round pick back if the plan is not for Lance to be the future.

Nice post you put quite a bit of work into it.
When all is said and done if we win 7 wins it will be a miracle.
The End..................
P.S. Like the Rico man, I think the kid might have what it takes to carry the heavy load.

Sounds logic but doesnt give any hope about "All in" and a successful season yet playoff birth.

They got a lot worse, lost Starting C, Starting LT, Starting DT, Starting RB, Key DE (Armstrong)

LB was paper thin already, playing safeties there and they only brought in Kendricks as a potential Starter.

Safety is paper thin.

They dont have a 4th this year and the 2023 Class looks dull so far.

They cant fill those needs with this Draft and even if they do so, they didnt get any better than las season.

The only hope is that Diggs and Overshown after massive injuries will contribute on Pro Bowl Level.

The schedule is brutal playing mostly playoffs teams and contenders from last season.

More than 8 wins would surprise me

Everything they did so far screams "Light Rebuild". So i have no clue why they keep McCarthy for that and bring in a veteran DC for 1 year.

More likely 12 wins again which would be very impressive.

Based on they have a good team and one of the top qbs in the conference and a top head coach with a winning track record.
But with a first place schedule, a net loss in free agency so far with more holes to fill than the draft allows for, how are they "more likely" to have the same number of wins as you said?

Great write up. They sure will be banking on many younger players. So they best hit on the 2024 draft.
Also, any low level FA's left out there, and a few UDFA's.

It will also come down to needing the coaching staff to be spot on with decisions, as well, in game decisions.

Nothing right now to make them seem they have become better. However, it is still early. Will need to see them on the field and of course many fans will be negative toward any positive comments from OTA's, and mini camps. That is typical, as all reports are usually on the up side. We will see in game 1, as TC and PS games go the same way. Though some players in the PS games do show promise. But it is still hard to tell at times.
