The NFL has requested teams submit their "Mount Rushmore" of storied famous figures. Not sure what they want to do with it, but if nothing else, it sparks fun debate and exercise, and it keeps the NFL on talk radio in May when not much is happening. (The NFL is genius.)
So who's the Georgio, TJeff, Abe, and Teddy of the Cowboys? Wow, not so easy for this franchise. In fact, I don't know which is tougher, whittling ours down to four or inventing four worthy Jaguars. Both are all-day mothers.
Has the makings of a fun thread, and I'll gladly introduce the candidates. No, there are no others beyond the following, and any attempt shall be declared fruitless reaching nonsense as of right here and now.
Tex Schramm
Tom Landry
Bob Lilly
Roger Staubach
Troy Aikman
Emmitt Smith
Michael Irvin
Jimmy Johnson
Jerry Jones
Yes, I know Clint Murchison made it possible for Landry by giving him plenty of time when others may not have. I know how great Tony Dorsett and Drew Pearson were, and I, too, loved Bullett and Lee Roy and Harvey and DJ and Big Larry and Woody, etc. (You Bill Bates folks, just pipe down. No room for Rudy here.)
To me, this is actually fairly simple. Sure, cases can be made for each, but there are clearly four that stand above the rest in my eyes.
Tom Landry - any subject of this nature begins and ends here. This man is the face forever.
Roger Staubach - You just can't say the name without seeing the highlights in your mind.
Emmitt Smith - He encapsulated the greatness of the 90s teams. He was the catalyst and the greatest warrior.
Troy Aikman - The only slightly debatable one. Irvin had too many other icky issues, so since there's only four allowed, he's the odd Triplet out. Tex Shramm falls short because he was more impactful to the NFL, and none of his visionary greatness would have mattered if not for Landry. Lilly is the one I might replace Aikman with.
Fire away. And if you'd like to mention the Mount Rushmore's of other teams, it's cool with me if the moderators don't mind.
