Tyler Smith has position flex. So, if we need him to, he can play LT this year until we find Smith Sr. I'm not willing to pull the plug on Tyron Smith, because he's still a top 3 left tackle in the NFL. And he's only 31. It's not like he shouldn't have a few more years, because he's not your typical lard *** that plays LT. Smith has a six pack.

That really isn't an apples to apples comparison. If you extrapolate the .531 without over 144 games, we would have won only 5 less without TS than with him. That comes out to 1 additional win every other season over a 9 year span. That truly is insignificant. There are a lot of variables that go into wins and losses but if you're trying to say TS was a big difference maker on the won/loss columns, the stats don't bear it out.

That is not to say that TS is not a HOFer.

Before his injuries hit, Smith was probably headed to Canton.

What's crazy is he was so dominate even playing banged up that he still is going to Canton even with him being injured as long as he has been (All decade team, 8x pro bow, and 7x NFL top 100 all get him Canton within 3 years of being elgible)

We all know what a great player Tyron Smith has been for this team. Before his injuries hit, Smith was probably headed to Canton and in my mind was absolutely the best player on this team from 2011-2016.

But his injuries have become a consistent problem. The 2015 season was the year he was healthy a complete season, and he has missed 32 games since 2016.

How important has Tyron Smith been for this team? Here are the team’s records with/without #77:

• With Tyron Smith playing, the Cowboys are 81-63. (.563)
• Without Tyron Smith playing, the Cowboys are 17-15. (.515)

With a healthy Tyron Smith, this team is a very good offense that can compete with anyone. Without him, it’s barely .500.

Which raises the question, Why does this front office still pretend they can get quality years out of Smith? It’s a risk that makes crystal clear the dangers of your front office having a “best case scenario” outlook instead of being prepared for what happens when he’s not here. Hey, I hope Tyron is here all season and plays great. But hope is not a strategy for winning.

Maybe they did address it with the drafting of Tyler Smith. We will see. It’s certainly one of the keys to our success this season and maybe the near future as well.

I think for the most part fans woefully underestimate the value of a player that can play on an island on that left side, “even if it’s just for 12 or 13 games” a season. Look around at the rest of the league for instance, Tyron has missed 32 games in 11 seasons…14 were in 2020. Trent Williams who many here were fawning over leading up to the playoff game has missed 42. Terron Armstead has missed 48 in 9 seasons, has never played a full 16 games and he received an 87m contract this year’s free agency. Ronnie Stanley has missed 34 games in 6 seasons and has only played in 7 since signing a 98m contract. Exactly how many times did Philly bring back Jason Peters on one year contracts after tearing his ACL (he was in Chicago this past season… actually played 15 games). Hell even Lael Collins has missed more games in his career… if you count the 5 from this seasons brain dead suspension. Personally I don’t see any reason to move on from Tyron until at minimum his contract is up and definitely not until there is a viable replacement for him!

I think you answered your own question on this one Bob.They ARE that much better with Tyron, and thats why they continue to hope/count on him. Dont discount exactly how much hope is actually a plan in Dallas, much like fans think. Then I realize the guys running the team are fans who happen to own it. Tyrons eventual replacement is most likely a first round pick the year AFTER LT is such a disaster that it ruins a season.....that's how problems are handled....as reactionary.
Meanwhile they gamble on longshots. Hey, maybe they eventually hit on a Ball/Waletzko. As a fan, I certainly HOPE they do.

I hope we keep Tyler as LG, we need a guy of his caliber at LG. Hopefully we'll find a different source to replace Tyron.

Your math is wrong on the without... 17/32=.531 not .515. So really not much different with or without, i.e. if we had one just one more game (18/32), the winning percentage would have been .563.

yes and like all stats, is flawed. It depends greatly on what defense they play each game with and who is the LT battling ?
Also is offense run heavy, pass heavy or balanced>? those things make a difference.

Yes, and like I said in my subsequent post there are a lot of variables that goes into wins and losses. That is why I think most of the QB debates are pointless.

So, what do we do when Tyron is out. Do we move Tyler over or does our left side become completely vulnerable? Our left side could very well dictate how our season goes.

I hate to shuffle multiple OL men around, I think because they need to work as a unit so moving multiple pieces creates issues, specially mid season. I rather plug in whomever is the swing tackle and deal with it.
