The Dallas Cowboys have some of the NFL’s best football players. From the moment he stepped onto the field, Micah Parsons established himself as one of the best defensive players in the league, earning Defensive Player of the Year votes in each of his first two seasons. CeeDee Lamb wasn’t supposed to be available when the Cowboys were on the clock in the first round of 2020, but the nation’s top collegiate receiver was passed up and now he’s wearing the star and is one of the top receivers at the pro level. And Trevon Diggs was the first player to have 11 picks in 40 years as he’s emerged as one of the game’s best corners.

All three of these guys wasted no time becoming All-Pros. All three of them play one of the most important positions in the NFL. And amazingly, all three weren’t on the roster a few years ago. And when you add Dak Prescott to the mix, the Cowboys have four strong players at four strong positions. What is even more satisfying is that three of them are still playing under their rookie deals. They’ve hit the ground running and the Cowboys are getting great production for a cheap price. That is similar to what Dallas had in Prescott during his super-cheap, fourth-round price rookie deal.

While it’s great to have so much talent at key positions, it can also be costly as talent doesn’t stay cheap for long. The front office knows this and has been preparing, much to the dismay of Cowboys fans. They’ve gotten out of the contracts of Amari Cooper, Ezekiel Elliott, and La’el Collins, all of which were atop the Cowboys payroll not very long ago. They’ve also allowed key players to leave in free agency like Randy Gregory, Byron Jones, and Dalton Schultz.

These decisions are not easy, but they are necessary. In fact, the Cowboys have cleared out enough contracts that their top two contracts now consist of the following:

  • Dak Prescott at $40 million (9th-highest in the league)
  • Zack Martin at $14 million (135th-highest in the league)
That is a huge gap between a team’s top-paid player and their second-highest-paid player...

And don’t even get us started on Parsons. When it comes time to pay him, he will likely reset the market and could be the highest-paid non-quarterback with an average annual salary of around $35 million per year. And let’s not forget that Prescott himself only has two more years on his deal and his next contract should exceed $50 million per season. Wow, that’s a lot of money.

Win it in the next 2 years ....or else

The time is now....this team may be gutted after that.

The phrase is usually " win it when a qb is on his rookie contract,:......I would change that to " win it while a Micah Parsons is on his rookie contract,"

Well, the Rams went all out and brought in playmakers and paid their players. They are in salary cap hell but they won a Super Bowl along the way.....

I don't think it will be as daunting as it seems. The new TV deal money kicks in next year.

Overthecap has next years cap at 256 million with Dallas having 24 in space. This year might be the most challenging. But Dallas has options to raise the cap space.

2025 is 282 million with Dallas having 159 million in space.

2026 is 308 million with Dallas having 276 million in space.

The contracts will be staggered and spread out. I believe Dallas has a plan in place to sign all the players and still keep cap flexibility into the near future.

It is manageable because some high paid guys soon go away and the new high paid guys will be backloaded.
That’s why they don’t spend just to be spending right now

So ironic to extend and spend all that money on Diggs, Lamb and Parsons.......and then flush it down the toilet with extension to Dak. But it is what it is. LOL....more wasted years of great players. As the world turns.

And don't come back with "well who else can play QB?" ...that should not be the reason to pay a bus driver $50m plus. Plain idiocy.

Micah Parsons is a game changer. He makes the defense work. They have to re-sign him whatever it takes.

I like CeeDee and Diggs, but they find a way to survive without either of them. They can draft replacements if they have to ot sign guys like Gilmore to get by.

Dak is the problem. His current contract was such a huge mistake by Dallas. Not only did they overpay him, but they agreed to a 4 year deal, no trade clause, and no franchise tag clause. Then they restructure the deal twice pushing $36 million into voided years. They compounded these other mistakes by not drafting a potential replacement they could groom to be ready for 2025. They basically put themselves into a position where they have no choice but to re-sign him. But what if he asks for $60 million? or $65 million? Dak will get re-signed or extended before his current deal is up.

The time to move on from Dak was when he demanded $40 million and 4 years with his last deal. I would have said no. I would have given him $32 million over 4 years and only $40 million if he signed for 6 years.

They are getting ahead of the curve by building a young team. That was their plan to draft and develop.

With the amount of money players are making these days, especially QBs every team is facing challenges.

That simply won't happen. There is enough cap space and the Cowboys are good with contracts except for one.
Still has to be a complete team with the most important team leader able to lead the team assembled...
