Yesterday, Bryan Broaddus of dallascowboys.com dropped a little nugget of information on his podcast that I thought was very interesting. Broaddus said that “Shazier was in the (Cowboys) top five plays in the draft” and he mentioned that Shazier graded about “10 spots higher than Martin.”

Kind of how the draft goes, I know Dallas had interest in Barr and Donald as well but once they went off the board the Cowboys adjusted. The biggest move was with Johnny Football still on the board and a lot of speculation leading up to the draft and draft day itself there seem to be talk of Dallas getting Manziel thankfully Martin was the man things could not have worked out better

Yeah, I believe Aaron Donald and Shazier were the ones the cowboys wanted most (and realistically could have dropped to them)

Love the Martin pick, but It's not like getting Shazier would have been a bad thing

I think we liked CJ Mosley too

I think that was a positional value issue more than a talent comparison. OG is not at top positional value. Now 4-3 LB is also not normally a top positional value, but in Marinelli's defense his top 2 positions are the 3-tech DT and the WLB.

I'm curious where they had Aaron Donald ranked relative to Shazier.

Surprised you are just now hearing about this.

It was written about right after the draft.

The basics of the story was that the Steelers were on the clock but Dallas thought they were going elsewhere so they called Shazier or Shazier's agent to tell him that they were going to take him with their pick and while on the phone the Steelers made the pick ahead of them.

Here...found an older article on it...

Jerry Jones has acknowledged that new Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was the No. 1 player on the Dallas Cowboys' draft board at No. 16 overall.

The story behind the story is that Manziel was only atop theCowboys' board because Pittsburgh had snatched linebacker Ryan Shazier out from under them just minutes earlier.

Steelers sources tell the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the Cowboys were on the phone with Shazier's agent and were ready to select himover offensive lineman Zack Martin with the 16th pick.

"I'm in the middle of writing a text that Dallas is going to take himand the phone rings and it's the Steelers," Vernon Shazier, Ryan's father, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "Good thing I didn't send out that text ... I think he ended up in the right place."

Jones confirmed after the first round that the Cowboys were targeting Shazier, Martin, Anthony Barr(No. 9, Vikings) and Aaron Donald (No. 13, Rams) entering the draft.

This could also be true. But 10 spots seemed pretty significant to me. It's why I've dedicated this week to studying Shaq Thompson.

I'm always happy to hear how we typically seem to have talent in the very top right. Claiborne is really the only miss I know about. Maybe Jonathan Cooper, but that's injury issues too.

Thanks BP. The part that surprised me was Shazier was top 5 on their board and there was a 10 player gap between him and Martin.

I don;t think it is new news to broaddus as I am pretty sure he has mentioned it before. It appears it is new news to the OP however.

I guess it is. I knew Dallas had Shazier over Martin. But I didn't know they thought that highly of Shazier.

I don't know if broaddus said the 10 spots higher part. I am also not sure the other poster was talking about that part either. I think it was just that the cowboys had him rated higher.

He was the only one going into the draft that I did not see the cowboys really being as interested in.

Figured Barr, Donald, Khalil Mack (although I doubt they felt they had a chance for him) and Martin.

The opinions on Thompson vary widely. The primary issue is his size. NFLDS estimates 6'1-5/8", 231 but there are claims that he played at 219.

IMO, he has the "it" factor. I think his development at LB was probably not maxed out in college because they used him all over including RB and Safety.

If they draft a 4-3 LB in the 1st/2nd round he needs to have excellent coverage ability even if there is some sacrifice in size. Considering that they play Nickel in over 50% of the snaps, the value of a running stuffing type LB is low, IMO.

Some are starting to project Thompson as falling to the 2nd round now; although, I'm certain that it wouldn't be as low as the Cowboys 2nd round pick. I think Mayock listed Thompson as a Safety prospect.

The other 2 good options at LB, IMO are:
Paul Dawson (has character issues)
Eric Kendricks

NFLDS has all 3 estimated to be about 230 pounds.

These 2 are limited in coverage from what I've seen:
Denzel Perryman
Benardrick McKinney

I agree with most all of this. I don't care too much about weight at LB anymore. But maybe that's just me. I was a fan of Telvin Smith last year and he played around 229 pounds. I think Shaq's a better player than Telvin.

I think Dallas will sign a DE in free agency and go target somebody for the WLB position. Think about it, we may loose 3 linebackers this off season.

Mayock seems to project Shaq at safety, which is probably appropriate, given his size.
