Is a joke. My uncle was killed over 4 years ago and one of the two killers just got sentenced today. Pathetic and inexcusable. :bang2:

Was the killer in jail all those 4 years before he got sentenced?

At least he got sentenced.

I'd be thankful for that much because some families don't even get that.

Yeah, but still it's ridiculous it took this long for one of the killers to be sentenced. It was a girl and a guy. Girl got sentenced today the guy has yet to be sentenced. The guy was sentenced to 60 years in prison. I know the odds of her living that long are slim, but still she should've gotten life.

At least they are off the streets so that nobody else can be harmed. So, I guess it's all good...don't you think.

Now, if they got off...then I would be pissed.

I think it's funny/odd you're presumed innocent until proven guilty, if that's the case why do you stay in Jail or need bail until the trial, if you're presumed innocent. lol

They set the Bail at $900,000,000.00

What fool has that kind of money?

The phrase "innocent until proven guilty" appears nowhere in The Constitution, what you are promised is due process. Your innocence is only presumed as an extension of the prosecution bearing the burden of proof, not you.

In other words, once accused, the accuser must prove your guilt but that does not absolve you from prosecution and the consequences of prosecution.

"Innocent until proven guily" simply means that the burden of proof is on the prosecution.

I think there is something inherently wrong with privately owned prisons where big businesses profit from the misery of people, especially when some of those owners pay fees to judges for sentencing people to their prisons. It just doesn't pass the smell test with me.

Why does the country which claims to be the most free country in the world have more people in prisons than any other country?

Something seems to me to need changing. Surely real criminals who have abused people, places or things deserve to be in prison but shouldn't there be a victim if an action is considered a crime?

JMO.

Private institutions generally have the ability to do more with less. The problem is, when one private institution doesn't have competition, the opposite tends to occur.

Private prisons were created to lower costs. Just like SpaceX was created to lower costs for NASA. (and for now, it's definitely working!)

They require competition though. Otherwise, highway robbery occurs. (look at the military aircraft industry)

I bet it sucks, but at the end of the day, justice was served, or atleast as close as the legal system can come. The two individuals weren't free to run a muck for 4 years, but had to sit in jail and await their fate, again if it were my uncle, I'd feel the same way, but objectively speaking, justice was served.

What you are describing is the prison-industrial complex. If you look at the amount of people incarcerated compared to the population before private prisons were instituted, the numbers seem reasonable. Look at the jump after these facilities came to exist and it indeed raises an eyebrow.
Just to note, there is also a military-industrial complex which is worth checking out.

We do not have any kind of a justice system. We have a legal system
