The debate continues: Is it the coordinator or the players on defense?

Twofold issue. Why do cowboy fans think you have to pick a side? Jerry and micah are clowns. The players and eberflus suck. Why is that so hard?

It always comes back to talent. But having said that not being able to line up correctly for Gents and Chicago games was ridiculous. At least against Philly and GB they seemed to do better at that aspect.

But it’s still the same Marinelli/Dungy scheme we’ve seen around here. Boring bend but don’t break.

Buddy Ryan and his “46 defense” of the ‘85 bears was not great because of his scheme. It was the HOF talent that made his scheme so great.

Scheme can maximize talent. If you don’t have a lot of talent to begin with, scheme or coordinator is not going to save your lack of talent.

Eberflus has some blame. But changing defensive coordinators at this point…when we’ve had 4 DCs in 6 seasons is not going to do anything to improve this.

Want to fix this defense? Start with our GM deciding what kind of defense and scheme we want to build around. Then draft and develop players that fit that. THEN choose a DC that aligns with that and stick with it. Our defense now is like a cheap patch quilt of players from multiple philosophies. Changing coordinators now fixes nothing.

PLAYERS!!!!!!!!! I watched play after play of LOUSY tackling, it's flat out horrible! The secondary has no speed to stay with the players they're guarding against; I hope over the next couple of seasons some of these bums get cut or released, because they don't belong as starters in this league.

Sanborn is a joke, slower than slow. He doesn't wrap up players that he's attempting to tackle, which results in extra yardage for opponents. Our defense is a day late and a dollar short, and they're lucky that Green Bay had such early success because in the beginning of the game it allowed the Green Bays players to get real relaxed and when that happened they lost their edge and found themselves in a dog fight.

It’s obvious there is a coaching problem.

You don’t have this many coverage busts & guys looking confused & it not be the coaches.

We lack talent on defense but not knowing what to do & giving up big plays is 1000% coaching when it comes with this much consistency.

They literally had to dumb the defensive call down to 1 word because whatever he is teaching isn’t getting through.

I don’t think it’s a scheme issue.

I think it’s a teaching of the scheme issue.

A good coach could teach anyone on this message board where to go and what to do.

It doesn’t mean we are capable but at least we would know what to do.

The Cowboys players are collectively lost.

With 31 other NFL franchises, yes. Here, unfortunately no.

Players are missing their assignments leaving wide open gaps throughout the secondary. It's on the players to understand their responsibilities and the coaches to put them in position to succeed. It isn't as simple as either/or. When you see a defense play this poorly, a number of factors come into play.

Is the personnel suited to play this defense?
Do the players understand their assignments?
Are the coaches providing adequate guidance to help them understand?
Is there a talent deficit?
If so, what can be done to work around it?
Are the coaches scheming to maximize the abilities of their players?

At the end of the day the blame falls on both the players and coaches, but it's on the DC to figure out the disconnect.
