Great post, I've been mentioning this for years but the conversation seems to always degenerate into a rant about the refs or the video taping scandal. Somehow the Pats went 11-5 last year without video taping or their elite QB, that certainly supports the points made in this post.
I wish Jerry would try to emulate some of the traits of teams like Philly, New England, Baltimore and Pitt. All 4 of these teams seem to have stayed pretty competitive throughout the free agency era and have refrained from getting their teams tied down with big contracts to a few players nor do they let the inmates run the asylum.
It appears that someone in our organization may be realizing these things as indicated by our off season. Hopefully Jerry can be restrained from making any crazy signings or trades and start to build an organization that is focused on team first, hard work & discipline. In these days of parity, free agency and the salary cap, you don't need a team full of superstars to be competitive. You just need a team that plays the game of football well.
I'm still mystified why Jerry won't empower his head coach, but that's probably never gonna change.
IMO, one thing I think will never change is that you have to have a better than average QB to be in the running for a championship year in and out. That's the one position on the team that's worth tying lots of money or draft picks up in obtaining.
Lastly, I heard a report that the Pats make players run sprints/laps after penalties in practice. This seems more effective as I just cant see how sitting out a play is that big of a punishment or a deterrent, seems tantamount to a time out for a child. Why our team can't stop committing so many penalties is bewildering.
