The Disaster Two Draft Picks that Changed Everything

Chaz Green plays for the Colts. Ajayi is out of football. Probably not the best example.

Chaz Green was a failure in Dallas and still is. We didn't need him at that time. He was drafted to be a backup. Its another wasted pick that could have gone for a runningback - which we needed at that time.

If Michael Irvin hadn't been found with hookers and coke, we may have drafted Randy Moss instead of Greg Ellis and we wouldn't have to see 1998 every Thanksgiving...

This is definitely the one that continues to give me nightmares. Not passing on Frank Clark and whatever chain of command that set off.

Every team every year can look at their picks with the benefit of hindsight and find players they would have been better off picking. That doesn't mean much. With Gregory there might be a real complaint though because we had warning signs about his drug problems.

And 3 rounds later Seattle takes Frank Clark. If Clark would have been selected there would have been no need for Taco.

But I know what you mean about hindsight.

It was the year 2015 where the Cowboys lost Demarco Murray to free agency and the Cowboys needed to draft a running with one top draft picks.

They still had the league's best oline. However, the thinking was "anyone can run behind this oline" which got them into trouble.

Their first pick was Byron Jones. This is a good pick. But they converted him into safety, which was another blunder by the coaches.

The next two picks I believe is where we really screwed up.

2nd round pick we went with Randy Gregory. A few rounds later the Seahawks select Frank Clark, Defensive End. Clark got 10 sacks and two force fumbles his first year. In his second year he had 12 sacks and now plays for Kansas City.

On the other hand, Randy Gregory is still addicted to dope.

With the 3rd round Dallas selects Chaz Green. This round is where they should have gone for a runningback. I would have picked Jay Ajayi with this pick.

If we would have picked Frank Clark instead of Gregory we would have not have selected Taco Charlton with our 1st pick in 2017. We would have gotten Kevin King instead who still plays for Green Bay. With our 2nd round pick we wouldn't have used it for Awuzie.

The next year, we needed a runningback badly. So we drafted Elliott. If we had Ajayi, I doubt that pick would have been for a runningback. I'd go with Ramsey and possible go with a running back in the 2nd round, pick Derrick Henry.

So with both those picks we were forced to pick Zeke and Taco. Where we could have had Jay Ajayi, Derrick Henry, and Jaylen Ramsey, and Frank Clark.

What are your thoughts? Let's discuss this rather then wallow over the lost to the Browns.

Maybe..you never know. I don't recall Byron Jones ever playing Safety

That's the thing fans always forget. If Dallas had drafted Randy Moss the media frenzy would have driven Moss off the deep end. After the White House scandal the reporters would have dug through his garbage and hounded him day and night. Instead he went to Minnesota and was completely out of the spotlight with no pressure.

RB at 4 is absurd in today’s NFL. And no shock it has amounted to nothing. But then they follow that up with an injured Jaylon Smith?? lol Finally drafting in the top 5 and these are the decisions. Unreal. Foolish with their top tier picks for years. Since the Claiborne trade up. This is not a smart front office!

The what if game will drive you nuts, but we just have to accept that teams will never make the ideal picks in every round.

In 2000 we could of had Brady but we had some guy name Aikman still on the team.

so you wanted us to draft a woman beater over a pot smoker?

Man let's be honest. We can talk about all the missed draft picks but that's bailing out this crappy team. This team has talent. This team screwed up on the coach it hired. That's how I feel right now. Maybe that will change in a few weeks but they hired the wrong coach. They had the chance to go to a defensive minded head coach or they had the chance to go fresh and new and they went with Mike McCarthy who looks lost. They went with a DC who looks lost. This was the wrong coaching staff to have in a year with no training camp or preseason. They are paying for it.
This is a question that I never thought I would ask but...would you prefer to have Jason Garrett as Head Coach over the second hand car salesman?

In before Randy becomes our best defensive player.

even if we still take Byron Jones in Rd 1....considering we had just lost Murray...David Johnson wouldn't have been a bad pick in the 2nd.
☆Re-Do☆
Frank Clark in Rd 1
David Johnson in Rd 2
woulda been interesting.

.....that's a tough question honestly. Because on one hand I do think he's a better coach but the team is worse.

What does that have to do with anything when the entire thread is about the situation 5 years ago?

Besides, being addicted to dope isn't a no-no any more.

We could have gotten Frank Clark instead of Gregory. Therefore, we would not have a reason to select Taco in the first round.

Chaz Green's pick should have been used for a runningback. If that would have been the case, we would have a big need for running back the year after. We would have selected Jalen Ramsey with our 1st pick and use our 2nd pick for Derrick Henry.
