Collins fits the bill from the 3 tech. Does Marinelli even have a desire to have his 1 tech be anything more than a run plugging, space eater?

I'd take a DT in this draft but in the middle rounds again........... Godchaux and Jones were the two I had interest in.

I go cross eyed every time I read how 3 step drops and the quick passing game negates a pass rush.

A smart fan knows it doesn't. It does the opposite in fact. It waves the white flag to the pass rush. If you're forced to operate your offense in such a limited fashion you are submitting to the pass rush as if it's coming on every play. Got to get the ball out now. Can't wait. No time for anything to develop down the field.

Every time you feel the need to have your QB throw the ball off his third step my pass rush has won. It's done it's job. It's put the back seven in position to make a play against a QB operating with no time and having to defend only a short field.

Quick hitting pass attacks like the Patriots can be affected just as much by interior pressure than an edge rush. There is more than one way to generate a pass rush, it is just that everyone has defensive ends on the brain. It doesn't have to simply come from the perimeter inside. Pressure matters, but it can come in different ways.

In a perfect world, yes you want the dangerous edge player because it draws double teams.

Can interior DL provide pressure? Sure.

But the teams that generate the best pressure consistently have good edge play. Some have good interior and edge play (like Carolina) but others are really edge driven (Denver, GB, Seattle). But the one thing they all have is quality edge play.

Yeah, inside pressure is vital. It's in the face of the QB and forces him to bail. I get it. The Cowboys have a rookie inside coming off a 5 sack season without a training camp and preseason.

But a three step drop doesn't negate the pass rush. It doesn't matter if they didn't get to the QB on that play. They operated their offense as if there was a jailbreak on the QB. The routes are shorter, the field is shrunk, the defenders don't have to cover very long at all. The exact type of environment you'd want your pass rush to create.

Don't love this class of DT's honestly. I'd love to get a beast next to Collins that can command consistent double teams and collapse the pocket, but not sure I see anybody like that. Jaleel Johnson, Caleb Brantley, and Carlos Watkins all look like decent prospects but nothing special. Don't like guys like Qualls, Tomlinson, Adams, and Godchaux at all.

DJ Jones is an interesting prospect. He's short but he's powerful and pretty quick too.

it seems that Marinelli doesnt want the classic 1 Tech DT. Does he want a more of 3 Tech playing the 1 Tech for speed? or is there a different type of 1 Tech that rather than a run stuffer is a pocket collapser?
its gotten a little confusing about what we want. I want a pocket collapser

Some people think we have that in Collins and/or Crawford. I don't see it that way, but oh well.

A guy like Tomlinson is your classic 1-tech. If we could get him, say, 3rd round I would be fine with it. Again, who really knows what Marinelli wants, "golden cock" was just a run stuffer with a try hard motor. Both McClain and Thornton just break the # 300 barrier, would he want a # 315 or so big boy inside next to a # 311 Collins ?
I would.

McClain is a souped up version of the Golden Cock. That is really all he wants there.

I think your right, and of course it doesn't matter what we think anyway. BUT. Talent acquisition is what the draft/F.A. is all about. And that has been my ***** for years. Marinelli may have a specific he likes - but surely, an upgrade in the talent at that position would help regardless .....

The fact for years we invested little in the 1 tech tells me he viewed that guy as a run plugging, block eating guy........... the kind you can get late in drafts and in FA for cheap.

Tomlinson from Bama should be in play at some point. The guy vanderdoes from ucla is terrible.

I guess since I don't believe that he is some budding future superstar, I do have an issue with him.

Collins can be a superstar if he had a real difference making 1T next to him which will never happen in Dallas with marinelli in charge
