I feel like this franchise has been stuck between #1 and #2 for the past 20 years.
After the Dark Ages of the Campo years, 2000-2002, the Cowboys with help from Bill Parcells, built a team capable of winning consistently. However, Jerry's participation in football related decisions combined with their inability to replace the talent on defense eventually brought them back to #1.
The team finally began to rebuild itself again but never seemed to perform beyond mediocrity. From 2014 to 2019, they combined for only three games better than a 50% winning percentage. They were stuck in #1.
More recently, the hiring of McCarthy combined with a vast improvement in cap management and player evaluation have resulted in back to back 12-5 seasons. They are, once again, back to #2.
However, what comes after #2 can be #3 or right back to #1. I feel like this season is the critical juncture.
