In my youth I was told a story of a fox and a chicken. This fox was prowling for prey when he happened upon a chicken. His mouth watered as he pictured biting into the delicious fowl and he made chase. Finally, after a long drawn-out hunger inducing pursuit, he cornered the chicken at a bend in the river and was able to capture the chicken.
While holding the chicken getting ready to “dig in,” out of the corner of his eyes he noticed the shadow of a much larger chicken on the opposite bank of the river. Again, his mouth watered as he began to mentally compare the snack in his hands to the banquet the shadow suggested across the river. Without another moment’s thought, he dropped the chicken he had caught allowing it to go free and bounded across the river to get to the bigger chicken, whose shadow was no longer there.
Much to his chagrin, he realized that what he saw was nothing more than the shadow of the chicken he had held. In case you were wondering, no fox or chicken was harmed in the telling of that old story, though thousands of chickens worldwide probably had their heads ripped off in the time it took me to tell the story and I will likely do lunch at one of the establishments responsible for funding that slaughter, for the sake of full disclosure.
Anywho, I was reminded of that old story in the aftermath of watching Dak put on yet another clinic at the QB position on behalf of our beloved Cowboys against the Bengals yesterday; the same Bengals that not too many “experts” and “analyst” and “former players” and “radio personalities” gave the Cowboys much of a chance to win against. I noticed on the various blogs I frequent, many of the Romo supporters have changed their argument slightly in the debate of who should start once Romo is healthy enough to do so. Now they are suggesting that Romo would win better. He would put up more point than Dak.
That may be so. But I do have just one question: How certain are you that we are not benching Dak for a shadow of Romo’s former self? And if all that is at stake here are style points or more convincing wins (or a bigger lunch for Mr. Fox), are we really sure we want to fix what truly isn’t broken? If it were my decision, I would dive fang first into the chicken in my hands, but that’s just me. And if you didn’t make the linear connection between the fox and the chicken story and the Romo vs Dak QB controversy, as long as Dak keep’s winning, I stick with Dak…with or without the style points or the more convincing element to those wins. ..but that’s just me.
