It's pretty hilarious that the Garrett guys want to give all the credit to Garrett because of this turnaround, but allow me to point out the facts:
I remember distinctly that they were saying that the "process" would take a couple of more years because Garrett was saddled with such poor talent. While the talent is still sub-par on the defense those guys are getting coached up and they are playing disciplined football. Thanks to Marinelli and his defensive scheme, where he is putting the players in good situations to execute the calls. The defense isn't doing anything exotic and the DL is putting enough pressure to make the opposing QBs move off their spot or find other guys. The question still remains, who exactly switched DCs, was it Garrett or Jerry/Stephen? No one has the clear answer but it was obviously the right move.
The offense is playing outstanding and they are finally playing to their strength - which is running the football. Something Garrett never stuck with throughout his tenure here. He has been directly responsible for losing games because he got pass happy/or allowed Romo to audible to passes to play catch up. This season we have clear evidence that running the football, despite being down a score or two, allows you to regain your game plan to play toe-to-toe with your opponent. That credit goes all to Linehan, who has Romo convinced that running the football is a good thing for your entire team. I've documented more than I care to count the times that Romo audibled out of run plays to pass plays in the Garrett OC days. And let's not forget about the lack of PA plays that many people have been wanting for years, yet Linehan comes in and starts doing it immediately.
So yes, Garrett should get some kudos, but he shouldn't get all of it, nor was it his master plan all along. It amazes me how the perception changes of head coaches, when better coordinators are hired and their units play better because they are getting good coaching.
But not all is well with the Cowboys, they still don't protect the football, they still commit untimely penalties, and they still allow big plays at times. So the process is still the process but at least the Cowboys are doing the things alot of us wanted them to do seasons ago.
