1. GM hires the coaches.
2. GM signs off on the draft choices.
3. GM selects the free agents from other teams and determines which of your own
you let walk or keep.
4. GM sets the tone for the culture and Identity of the Team.
5. GM makes the shrewd trades.
6. GM oversees picking the right UDFAs.

So the quality and football acumen of the GM really determines how good/bad your team is.
If you don't get that position right, it's really difficult to overcome in such a competitive League.

A good GM recognizes their blind spots well. Howie Roseman kept screwing up the WR evaluation so he stopped trying to be the smartest guy in the room and drafted from a premier program (D.Smith) and traded for a game changer when he saw the opportunity (AJ). He seems to learn from his mistakes which may be his greatest trait.

Certainly not a GM but I see 3 common mistakes teams make.

Oervalue draft picks. When you consider the “hit rate” vs an established NFL player draft picks aren’t as valuable as many teams think.
Hold on too long- better to get rid of a player a year too early than a year too late. They’ll be more expensive and less productive
Fail to admit mistakes- too many teams will keep playing a guy because he’s a high pick or keep a guy around because they signed him to a bad contract. Better to cut bait and take the short term cap pain than hold on.

I think Jerry has done a great job with the draft and UDFA.
I think he has some work to do in the other areas.
What say you?
Being the owner AND GM is inherently a bad decision. The GM job is very different from the guy who is determining the financial decisions of the team. Owners tend to treat their players as “friends” or employees they have personal attachments with. Jerry clearly does that. There’s a reason the winning owners of the last 27 SBs all hired someone else to be their GM.

The best GMs and personnel evaluators can’t afford to get sentimental attachments with players. They must have a cold, steel-eyed view of players based 100% on what they can do for the team in the future, not what they did last year. By hanging on even one year too long to a player costs the team the chance to be at its best.

Jerry is a business genius who is not an effective GM. Hiring Will McClay is about the only thing keeping him from being an even bigger embarrassment. Sadly, Jerry Jones is a fantasy football player with a real NFL team. He has proven for decades he doesn’t get it.

GM and QB IMO…

I know I’ll eat some hate for this but I think we have a good QB. Top 7/8 in EPA over the last 3 years but no one wants to hear it.

If we had a legit GM we never would’ve taken a RB top 5, never would’ve extended him, never would’ve traded Cooper, never would’ve gone into this season with UDFAs starting at WR etc…

Gonna have to give the Eagles fan a like because he earned it.
Excellent post.

I think he is a substandard GM and owner. If the goal is building a winning team, which includes players and coaches, he sucks in my opinion. I’d say the GM is at a disadvantage since his owner de-prioritizes football for sales and headlines. Unfortunately, the two are the same person.

He’s also now the “off my lawn” poster boy to boot.

Yup, case in point, Howie Roseman. Brilliant trades, using the FA, and pretty good drafts. So, they're in the SB. We do things on emotions, and can't get past the division round.

We have an 80 year old turd at the GM position. Unfortunately the football acumen ship sailed a long time ago. Right around 1994?

Jerry drafts better than average

He sucks at hiring coaches (he has hired assistants too that were doozies - Monte Kiffin for example)

He sucks at FA

He sucks at self scouting. They sometimes overpay their guys. Loyalty is a big factor in roster decisions.

Imagine where this franchise would be if Jerry and company actually didn't draft as well as they do.

Jerry needs to be far more committed to signing veteran free agents that are above tier 3 prospects. I'm sure Will McClay would be glad to lend a hand in assisting him with the correct individuals to fill that need. It'd be great if we got some that weren't old vets who were at the end of their careers. He also could use some sage advice in selecting his coaches and assistants. If he found a good coach, that coach should be able to help with that assignment.

Go read Jerry's profile page on the official Cowboys website......

Read how his "stewardship" of the franchise brought "unprecedented results and success to one of the world's most popular sports entities."

Read how he has "created a vivid imprint on the landscape of the NFL and the American sports culture."

However,

Jerry's official team profile as the GM differs from every other GM in the NFL.

Typically after the initial introduction, a GM's profile uses the next several paragraphs to list his credentials. Not Jerry. He substitutes that subject because it does not apply to him. He has no such credentials.

Credentials are the proof that the GM was qualified to take the position. They include past achievements at various levels of NFL scouting, beginning with assistant scout all the way up to Director of Player Personnel, all levels in between. It was a record of success.

The "credentials section" is substituted by the "visionary architect" section describing construction and cost of the AT&T stadium

The highest level of commitment and focus are also prime qualities that are expected of an NFL GM. It is no mere job, it is a calling. A 24/7 responsibility. They want to make history and they have a plan. Part of that plan begins with some long nights, some office sleepovers.

Nope, not Jerry.... A GM?.....Who needs one?

Jerry's skills and intellect are so wired to NFL football that he doesn't even need to consider it as a fulltime job. He can continue his other several interests like franchise owner, Colosseum architect, and TV commercials superstar. Just let him know when it is decision time or media time.

Jerry obviously does not have the appropriate background to be a NFL GM , but here we are as fans, hostage year 28 and counting.
