So I was listening to Late Hits last night on Sirius NFL radio and Gil Brandt was on. Towards the end of the show he was asked a question about the Cowboys draft. He said something that kinda surprised me. He said something about Columbo probably moving on after this year and that he thought the Cowboys would address the Tackle position in the first 3 picks.

Now I thought he played pretty well for us last year and I am not sure why we wouldn't re-sign him. I trust Gil Brandt tremendously and what the man says is usually right on the money, but this was a bit off. He actually mentioned to keep this name in mind. Shiloh Rachel. I never heard of him but Gil seemed to be pretty high on him.

Anyone know about this guy?

he's talking about Chilo Rachal from USC, he'll probably be the 2nd or 3rd OG selected..looks like a Hudson Houck type OL prospect too

as for Columbo, yeah I think he is gone after this season...he wanted a new contract after last yr, and reportedly the Jones' said no. We drafted two tackles last yr and also have McQuistan, who will be a RFA after this season

He was probably referring to the fact that Columbo will want too much money to resign. Since we have so much money tied up with the rest of the line we will not be able to afford to resign him.

I have kind of tossed around the idea of Chilo in round 2 in a couple of mocks, he seems like the type of player Houck would love to work with. Problem is the OG class is weak and Chilo might no last that long.

I thought he said he was a tackle but I may have misheard him. I'll defer to you on that one. Is he a second round pick and if so, what his work out numbers.

I'm just to lazy to look it up. In your opinion is he worthy of a second round pick?

I had him in on of mine, but I think I had him then in the 3rd or 4th...since that time he has really risen according to many and will probably be a 2nd or early 3rd pick at the latest

I love his nasty edge, but odds are we will have to let him go. I think Jerrah has already decided that since he did not rework the deal like he kind of said he would last year.

I think another name to watch is Carl Nicks from Nebraska. He has some off the field issues but he is in the mold Houck lineman. I really like what I have seen from him if he checks out alright off the field.

I like Colombo he has done well. Not sure that we cant replace him though. My bias - keep him.

I dont like Doug Free as a Right Tackle.

Hopefully McQuiston or James Marten can play that Right tackle spot.

Ungrateful SOB. He was out of the game with no prospects until Jerruh took a flyer on him and gave him a redshirt season to rehab. I understand the business aspects of it, but you would think that Columbo would think about how much money he would be making if Jerruh hadn't given him a second chance.

We 2 high picks on the roster already. Doug Free (hear lots of good things about hiM), James Marten. Also folks at the ranch seem to like McQuistan.

Why would we not give these guys some real game day looks and see what we have?

People seem to have Columbo on a very high pedestal due to his toughness, but I'm under the impression that while he has given us more than we ever expected when signing him, Columbo is the weakest link on our OL as far as pass protection goes. Adams is almost always expected to be on an island alone because we have to give Columbo help.

That's my take on it.

Colombo was signed by Parcells to a 2 year deal in Nov 05 & told to totally devote himself to rehab rest of season; he rehabbed well enough to win RT starting job in 06. Although he received a better offer from the Broncos after 06 season ended, he chose instead to sign a 2 year contract with the Cowboys for the lesser amount of $7M.

He's 29/30 & next contract is his last chance to get some real serious money. Don't know what starting RTs now earn but you better believe it will be lot more then the Cowboys can afford even the huge upcoming deals with Ware & Newman. We also need keep TO & would also prefer keep Canty & MBIII. Same goes for Hamlin but we drafted Marten & Free in 07 just to be sure we ready when our starting OTs leave. Believe Marten & McQuistan will see lot of playing time at RT in TC since Free probably penciled in as Adams eventual successor although McQuistan could also be in that battle.

You know if we missed on Free, Marten and McQuistan which is what this would mean then that sucks.

I'm hopeful one of the young guys can take Columbo's position.

I think more than any other reason, the running game struggled becuase Columbo is just not a good run blocker. He gutted out a good season as far as pass protection, but I think it's important to have a RT who's more of a factor in the running game.
