Justin Beriaut
Ugh, he really wasn't that good. He would have been a career special teamer, maybe starting at safety in a pinch. The guy just wasn't a good enough athlete.

Derek Ross is the guy I liked. He had like 5 picks as a rook...and then pissed it all away.

Beriaut couldn't stay healthy, never made it through camp. But had flashed of being a big hitter at safety.

Ross couldn't stay in the league because he was a mess and couldn't hack it because he was a losser.

Is Ross still in the big house taking six back the hard way?

How about Jimmy Smith? Does he count? There has always been reports of how good he's looked at TC, but never got a chance to prove himself in actual games b/c of injuries. Once released and finally healthy, he's proved to be a great receiver (borderline HOF numbers actually).

As a Cowboy fan, he has to be one of the biggest disappointment in terms of "what could have been".

I think Jimmy Smith is a great addition. Man, what a career the guy ended up having and we just let him go.

Hos,

Just curious why you have Henson on your list?

Because I think he could have been very good. Not sure why he failed here so badly and everywhere else so far.

I was thinking about the players we have had who could really play, you saw flashes of what they would have been, but they never really made it because of injuries or factors outside the game. I'm going to start a list, see if you can add to it.

David Lafleur - never really reached his potential because of injuries. This guy, to me, was the first Witten type of TE that we had in the modern era, but his back problems cost him. He tried to play through them but in the end just couldn't.

Billy Cannon Jr. - 1st round draft choice, never really got a chance to get going, injury.

Mike Sherrard - 1st round pick in 86, had 47 catches his rookie year and never played again for the Cowboys. Resumed his career with the 49ers, Giants and Broncos, but never reached potential due to his leg injuries.

Randy Hughes - The guy was a great safety waiting to happen. Injury cut his career short.

Thomas Henderson - Yes, I know this guy actually "made it" and had some great years, but man what he COULD have been without the drugs.

Duane Thomas - How a guy with his talent drops off the map after 2 years I'll never know.

Otto Stowe - Traded to Dallas in 1973, Stowe was having an All-Pro season. Through six games, he led the Cowboys in receptions (23), receiving yards (389) and touchdowns (6) before an ankle injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. Despite playing just half of the year, he still led the Cowboys in touchdown catches and ranked second in receiving. He played just one more NFL season, seeing limited time with the Denver Broncos in 1974.

Anyway, I know there are a bunch more, just the first that come to my mind. Who can you add?

And the bolded part is where I stopped reading...

Sorry, but the only thing LeFleur was good at was blocking. Not a single dang thing else.

Willie Blade had potential. Just couldn't stay out of the trainer's room.

Mr. Poopy Pants? Yeah, he had the potential to clear a room.

I must have missed that story.
He got hit by Jamar Martin on a block in Training Camp. The rumor was he got hit so hard he crapped his pants.

Should have kept reading :), Lafleur had over 30 catches his 3rd year and led the NFL in TD catches by TE's with 7. The guy was a great athlete, he just had terrible back problems.

He was on my list. I like hard hitting FBs.

I don't know which list is uglier: the QBs who followed Troy (save for one) or the FBs who succeeded Moose.

Alvin Harper had great potential. He was happy to play second fiddle to Irvin.
Danniel Stubbs was supposed to be Charles Haley before Charles Haley.
Howard Richards was also the LT of the future for 4 or 5 seasons. Knee injuries did him in. Todd Cristensen was another great that got away. We cound'nt convince him to switch to TE. Mike Walter also went on to win 3 sb's with the 49'ers. and last but not least, we gave up on Roger Ruzek who became a Cowboy killer for a 2 or 3 seasons with the eagles while we strugled with Luis Zendejas and others.

Solomon Page.

Should've been a beast. Instead he sucked.

Remember the premise though guys. Its not DISAPPOINTMENTS I'm looking for. I'm looking for guys that actually SHOWED promise, but due to either injuries or factors outside of football never reached their potential.

Anyone who ever made the NFL had "promise." It isn't an easy accomplishment.
