The Green/Zion Debate at 24

I still lean towards Green due to his prowess as a run blocker, which this team really needs.
love'm both.
i'd be happy with either one.
there is a group of players i love that i'd be happy with.
•travon walker,de-georgia
•jermaine johnson,de-fsu
•george karlaftis,de-purdue
•jordan davis,dt-georgia
•devontae wyatt,dt-georgia
•nkobe dean,lb-georgia
•kenyon green,og-texas a&m
•zion johnson,og-boston college
•tyler linderbaum,c-iowa
•trevor penning,ot-n iowa
•bernhard raimann,ot-c michigan
•chris olave,wr-ohio st
•treylon burks,wr-arkansas

any of those lucky 13...i'd be a happy ol'fan.

It appears DE, WR and OL are the positions they are targeting. Dean/Hill could come into play if they get wiped out.

i think dean will be long gone by 24.
same with those de's...but you never really know.
thats why i try to have such a big want list.
you just dont know who or what the draft tide will bring in.

I think realistically it's shaping up to be either OL or WR in rd 1.

I'm for Zion Johnson. His game is cleaner. He is a finished product. He can play anywhere on the O- Line. Better athletic numbers at the combine than Green. Kenyon Green looks a little chubby love handles and stuff vs Zion who looks more sculpted. Zion seems to have a very good understanding and makes little mistakes vs Kenyon Green who can be tricked at times.

Clearly the team has a huge hole at starting LG as they let Connor Williams walk, Collins released and McGovern failing as a starter. They will probably add some depth in fa, but they are hunting Guards in this year's draft.

If both Kenyon Green and Zion Johnson are available at 24, assuming no trade down is an option and they offer the most value on their board, who is your pick?

-Floor vs Ceiling? Zion may have the higher floor, but Green has the bigger, upside potential.
-Who possesses the best positional flex? Both have the versatility to play all 5 positions.
-Scheme versatility, can they play in both zone/man scheme? Yes
-Do they have the strength to anchor effectively, can they handle the bigger lineman? Yes
-Green is the better run blocker, where Zion is the better pass protector.
-Zion plays generally clean, where Green has struggled with penalties especially as a Tackle.

I truly believe we are splitting hairs with both prospects. Green just turning 21 and having success in the SEC has the edge from me, but wouldn't hate drafting Zion either.
It probably doesn’t even matter, because just like the past few drafts, EVERYBODY knows who the Cowboys are targeting. One of them will go a few spots before the Cowboys and somebody else will trade up right in front of the Cowboys to get the other. We’ll either draft a WR or reach on a DE.

Green or Zion is a toss up. I would give the slight edge at this point to Green. Very possible one of the guys is the pick at 24.

The question is which guy does the Cowboys think will win in a street fight. The one thing I am hearing from every Cowboys insider is the team wants to be tougher and want players that drink/eat football. Have the Cowboys meant with Johnson?

I haven't found anything linked from the Cowboys and Zion Johnson yet. There was a tweet at the BC pro day and the Cowboys weren't mentioned. Both are considered high character players, but Green is considered more of the mauler, where Zion is more finesse.

How do you figure Zion having the higher floor but Green having bigger upside potential?

There the same thing lol

Floor and ceiling aren't the same. Floor is how the player performs today, where upside is how the player performs when and if he reaches his potential.

Maybe it's just me but I'm not convinced they'll pick either player 24 IF giving a top WR, DE or T is there. A guard doesn't have enough positional value at 24 for Jerry IMO. Now if one of those top five players drops, sure but to stay at 24 and use it on a guard? In fact, I can see him trading down a few spots to pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder even if Johnson and/or Green are in play.

Same here. A guard prospect has to be on Zack Martin's level for us to draft them in the first. If the choices on the board are these G's, but no receivers or ends that strike their fancy, I see a trade down as well

1000%.......

Zion for me. Let me get Alec Lindstrom a couple rounds later as well

When comparing Green/Zion to Tyler Smith you have to look at say two seasons from now. Smith could be as bad as Steele was in 2020 but if he improves like Steele did in 2021 the guy would be considered the steal of the draft. You can’t teach 6’6 330lbs and nasty. I have a feeling the Cowboys will draft the guy with the most upside.

Trading down is going to be extremely difficult in a draft that has similar rated players from 11-40. They have a huge hole currently at the position and haven't addressed to yet via fa. They can play a game at both WR/DE, but not at Guard, where McGovern flopped last yr as a starter. Both Green/Zion might have positional flexibility to at least play Center which makes the positional value higher.

They usually spend their 1st rd pick on immediate, plug and play impact starters, which Smith probably won't be. The fanbase will be screaming bust if their 1st rd pick doesn't make an early impact. With MM on the hot seat, I doubt he would like the idea of red shirting their 1st rd selection. Unless they trade back, which I don't see happening, I cannot envision them taking Smith. I understanding your point, but this franchise never plays the long game with their 1st rd picks.
