The title has evolved over time. Originally it revolved around the success on the field and national following. Now it’s more about the tv viewership and ratings.

I think the national following has the most to do with it

I was in Ford Field this past weekend

That stadium was at least half Cowboys fans

A Lions season ticket holder next to us told me he'd never seen that many visiting fans at Ford Field ever and he's there every week

The Cowboys still draw amazingly well all over the place. If we won another Super Bowl or two it would be even more evident

National following is national following. Same thing with Notre Dame.

Their last title was 88. Farther ago than ours

They still have amazing national following. Probably always will

Given the current condition of said country, the Bengals should be America's team.

Yes but a big part of that national following base is from Alumni or Catholics.

The Cowboys national following is mostly wagon fans who hopped on cause they were more attractive than their local or regional team.
