Dallas gets crucified for reaching on Frederick and the Giants get nothing but praise for taking Pugh an even bigger reach at #19.

Pugh was the most overrated player in the pre-draft rankings, IMO. He is now the biggest "reach" pick.

I just don't see what teams like about him. He has quick feet, but minimal anchor strength and very short arms.

Once again I agree with you.
He's kind of the T-Rex version of Doug Free.

Please don't try to justify our idiocy with the idiocy of others. Who gives a on how other reached and how the media perceives them. The fact remains we reached.

agreed. even if you say travis isn't better than pugh (I happen to think he is), they are at least equal. And we got our guy a dozen picks later and added a third rounder to boot.

At the end of the day all that matters, is how we play once the season kicks off.

All this media talk, and people banging their head or being happy over this and that draft pick, means nothing

Some might be star, some might blow a knee. Just have to wait and see.

How bout the hypocrisy of the fans? Everyone complains that our top picks every year aren't OL or DL. I admit there was better "value" at #18 on the DL, but the area we really needed help at was the OL. So what did we do? We went out and got the best available interior OL outside of the big names who went in the top 10. Not to mention, we flipped that into an extra 3rd round pick. We spent our first pick on the trenches. Yet all the trench thumpers aren't happy.

Good point. I thought Fred and Pugh were both late 2nd/early 3rd round picks.

But that's the media, I agree they totally ignored that reach. As well as whoever it was that took Howie's kid.

But as a cowboys fan... I couldnt' care less what they did. I only care that MY team picked someone too early after getting bent over by the 9ers.

Are the Giants are playing him at tackle or guard? If at guard are his arms too short to be effective there?

I don't really know what you're talking about, here in NY the Giants are taking some heat for taking Pugh. Taking Nassib in the later rounds and Reese's track record are giving them a little bit of a pass, but no one is really totally embracing the pick.

I do however credit them for Hankins, their front 4 probably won't even miss a beat

Are the 49ers taking heat for giving up a 3rd to take a second round safety? Kipper, mcshay, mayock all had Reid as there 3rd best safety and a second round prospect.

Fred would not have made it past detroit

Actually, I posted about this in another thread before I saw this one. Dallas is always cast in the most negative light while some other organizations can do no wrong in the media's eyes.

If Dallas stays at 18 and takes Reid, then they reached. But the 49ers are smart for moving up to take Reid at 18 even though they gave up a third rounder.

New York and Chicago also did the exact same thing as Dallas. They both passed on Floyd and took OL's generally projected to go in round 2. The difference is that at least Dallas moved back and got an extra third rounder. But Dallas gets slammed while there's hardly any news about New York and Chicago reaching (at least nationally).

If Dallas takes Frederick at 31, they have reached. But Baltimore could have taken him at 32 and nobody would have a problem.

Do you really want to argue the track record of a Jerry Reese vs Jerry jones? Really!!

Agreed. How can we get panned when we picked up a 3rd round pick, and still got best Center in draft WHO could also play guard at near the levels of where NYG and Chicago took their guards. They got Guards that aren't ranked 1 or 2 at their positions, nor did they get a 3rd rounder pitched in?!

Our Center is big, and SMART. I like the brains and want to keep him at C. Rather have an elite C than an average guard. So let's keep him there, and sign Moore for a season or two if we really had to, while drafting another G next year!

Past performance should not be a factor with kiper and crew. They grade by how they had players rated. If they ding the boys for Fred than the giants bears and 49ers for the bigger reaches they did.

Pugh wasn't a reach. He was pretty much considered a late rising 1st round pick by most everyone in the weeks leading up to the draft. It wasn't a surprise at all to see him go at 19 to the Giants.

Well said!!! Who gives a flying flip bout what the media and talkiing heads say, reach or not, we got a solid rock to anchor our oline and protect Romo up the middle and that's the bottom line.

Kiper had a borderline first round grade on Pugh. 31st overall on his board. He had Frederick 87th overall.

You're imagining a situation that isn't there. Sometimes we're not victims of anything other than our own doing.

He had Long 23rd overall on his board. Reid was 64th and did criticize them for not taking a better safety in his opinion. But he liked the rest of their draft so it didn't effect the grade as much.

The highest rated player on Mel's board that we selected was J.J. Wilcox. He had him 51st overall. Then B.W. Webb was 78th. Escobar was 84, Frederick 87 and Williams 93. He only does a top 100 these days.
