The importance of a pass rush

I'm sitting here watching highlights of Super Bowl XIX on NFL Network. I was reminded of a stretch during the second quarter where Dan Marino, a true hall of fame quarterback even back then, completed only one pass while the 49ers scored 21 points. While the narrator was pointing out that fact, NFLN showed approximately eight highlights of Marino's pass attempts. All of them were very poorly thrown balls.

A constant, heavy pass rush will make a good quarterback throw bad passes. Even though Wade Phillips wasn't my first choice of head coach to replace Parcells, I'm confident that his defensive scheme can put more pressure on the quarterback. I'm also sure that Spencer's addition will be another key to improving the pass rush.

You can have the best corners in the NFL, but they're toast if the quarterback has all day to throw the ball. A good or great defense starts at the LOS.

Though this is a good observation, it's almost one of those no **** realities of the NFL. Go back and look at the Super Bowl winners of the last, well, whenever. They all had an elite pass rusher/rushers on teh team.

Shante Carver, Ekuban, Ellis even...these are all examples of how important that position is. Id say if yuo ahve your QB, LT, and DE, you are half way there to building a winner.

Well, you won't get an argument out of me, but keep that thought in mind the next time you read a, "We should've drafted a cornerback in the first round!!!" post. ;)

I dont think I did a good job of not sounding condecending. I definately agree with what you are saying. And I agree with what you are saying about Spencer. Sure Ellis was pretty good last year, but at some point we gotta get sick of pretty good. We can sugar coat it all we want, and I do give Ellis credit for playing Strong Side DE for so many years, but come on, 8 sacks as your best season? Thats not elite by any means.

Really, that is what next years second first round pick is for unless they use the first pick on a game changer type of corner. After seeing Spencer play in high school and 4 years at Purdue I am convinced he will be an outstanding player and a game changer. He and Ware will make the cornerback position less important for the next few years.

Lets hope Cleveland doesn't score many points this year.

Pressure defense. It works in every sport. If your defense sits back and is reactive rather than proactive, your screwed. I would rather have the teams I coach go down being aggressive. Force turnovers. Create havoc. Have fun.

Hopefully, the "savior" will start for them then.

Perfect example: We won SB's with Larry Brown as one of our starting CB's and he was absolutely terrible in my eyes but he had Haley, Lett, Tolbert, and others putting heat on the QB on every down. He went to the Raiders who had no pass rush and did absolutely nothing. A consistent pass rush is a must...

It is where the evolving and ever changing NFL Rules is forceing the D to go

D-backs, LB's etc can only bump inside the the zone from LOS---after that its up to pressure to disrupt things from the QB end........Have to force the Off to keep rb's and TE in for help (ala Boys" last couple yrs).

Face it.......if scoreing trends down, Jerry and all the other owners will just pass more rules to increase scoreing..........NFL is an entertainment business, in competition, TD's sell tickets, sell ESPN, Sell jerserys..........They will continue to pass rules to increase scoreing...........

D-coordinators will continue to figure out how to get to the QB..........kinda like selling weapons to a 3rd world dictator seems like, a dog chaseing its own tail ...........but that is like

I just hope the NFL never goes the way of the NBA- that sorry excuse for so called Basketball. They were so sure that scoring was everything that they warped the whole game just to do that.

That, and the fact that they draft too many underage kids. Pro basketball is one professional sport which should have strict higher age requirements. I do not watch it nowhere nearly as often as I used to years ago, but the few times that I do now, it seems like I'm watching a pickup game.

Have to agree with this also, I laughed so hard when Larry Brown got all that credit, and to me he sucked, it was always the pressure. Maybe Haley, Lett, and Tolbert could have turned Derek Ross into a player...

OK, well, maybe not, lol.

Actually, Derek Ross was a player unlike Larry Brown. Ross had game, it was his head that wasn't right.

I've continually gone over statistics that show that sacks have an extremely high correlation to winning and losing in the NFL. If your team has a lot of sacks, you're likely to win a lot of games. If you don't have a lot of sacks, you're likely to win very few games (there are exceptions to the rule).

Generally, the number to keep in mind is 40 sacks in the regular season. If the Cowboys defense can get that (which is 2.5 sacks per game), they are likely to do pretty well. I also found out that total sacks and sacks per pass attempt are actually virtually the same in the NFL most of the time, so keeping track of total sacks is just easier to do.

A lot of people laugh at Al Davis, but his credo of "the Quarterback must go down and must go down hard" is truly vital in the NFL.

If Ross wasn't a headcase, he was easily projected to be a first round pick. He had 5 INT's in limited action his rookie year behind a defense that only got 24 sacks in 2002.
