The importance of a pass rush

I've continually gone over statistics that show that sacks have an extremely high correlation to winning and losing in the NFL. If your team has a lot of sacks, you're likely to win a lot of games. If you don't have a lot of sacks, you're likely to win very few games (there are exceptions to the rule).

Generally, the number to keep in mind is 40 sacks in the regular season. If the Cowboys defense can get that (which is 2.5 sacks per game), they are likely to do pretty well. I also found out that total sacks and sacks per pass attempt are actually virtually the same in the NFL most of the time, so keeping track of total sacks is just easier to do.

A lot of people laugh at Al Davis, but his credo of "the Quarterback must go down and must go down hard" is truly vital in the NFL.
