Or our inability to score TDs rushing the football.

Our OP is obsessed with our 5 rushing TDs in 2011. He's started more threads and made more posts on it than I can possibly count.

I have to give him high marks for creativity on expanding that stat. Games won without a rushing TD.....priceless.

But I agree, 5 rushing TDs is terrible. We have to seriously improve on our ability to run the ball when the defense thinks, believes or even knows, we are going to run it.

Two or more new higher quality interior OL should help.

First exaggeration then derision then agreement.

I thought the OP was quality. JMO.

So 8 of the top 9 teams with "team wins" all made the playoffs but Dallas.

It would have been 9 out of 9 but those other team's head coaches didnt piss away 3 games all by themselves with critical in-game coaching mistakes.

Just saying.

No. That's 6 wins without a running back TD or return TD. Two more wins than any other team in the league, and twice as many wins as any other non-playoff team.

The Cowboys only had 2 wins in which they scored a running back TD or return TD. The only teams with fewer such wins were the Rams (2-14) and Colts (2-14).

How did the Broncos win 4 game without a return or RB td? I'm assuming you're not counting Tebow as an actual running back for the purposes of these stats.

Very good point. I should have.

After all, the real question is, "Did the team present an actual red zone running threat?" and the Broncos certainly did.

As an aside, return TD are incredibly underrated by most fans.

I agree with this,

Why doesn't this speak to the need for playoff teams to be able to win without a RB scoring a TD?

Yes we didn't score enough RB touchdowns, but doesn't this indicate that the teams who are capable winning without them are the ones who make the playoffs.

That's an amazing stat! Thank you very much. I appreciate the work.

You're welcome.

I think it's the most jaw-dropping stat I've ever seen. It really shows how passing offense carried the team, and how being outstanding in that one area wasn't enough.

No. Just think about Dallas. The Cowboys won more games without them than any other team, so why didn't they make the playoffs? Because they only had 2 wins with them.

When you look at the 2011 Cowboys and you take away the passing game, what you've got left is a bad team that didn't make big plays.

This is a pretty telling stat, but I would also like to see it the other way (# of losses when Rb or Kick returner or even a kick return TD).

Hard to believe it was only 5 .TDs

i guess its true that you can interpret stats any way you like to tell
the story any way you want it.

what i see from those stats are the fact that prolific passing attacks and/or good defenses made the playoffs. EXCEPT for the cowboys.
look at the teams at the other end of that list......they all suck.

here's a stat for you ;
the Giants were dead last in rushing in 2011.

and whats with that return TD stuff....the Packers and 49ers had 2 each and
the rest of the playoff teams had only 1 or none . 14 return points during an entire 16 game regular season is hardly a factor.

the important part of the running game is NOT how many TD's you actually score rushing ; it's all about ball control and clock management.
.....now there's the stats you should be addressing , that's why the Cowboys missed the playoffs.

Correlation can be show. The problem here is that with us as obvious the exception, lack of return and rushing TDs correlates with making the playoffs. To me that diminishes the impact of it.

I do not disagree that our inability to run for first downs or touchdowns in short yardage hamstrung us time and again. this does not show me that though.

i guess my point is that when its 3rd and goal from the 2 yard line
it doesn't matter whether you run it in or pass it in , as long as you score.
you still get 6 points , the clock still stops , you still line up for a 1 or 2 point conversion.
how you scored has no relevance whatsoever.
its not like the Cowboys got "stuffed" on 20 goal line stands.

red-zone efficiency is a much more important/relevant stat.

I can watch the games and see for myself we can't run the ball well in short yardage including on the goal line. That makes Red have to dance to find a way to score via passing. Which leads to the screwball looking plays at times. You just can't be one dimensional in this league. You have to run the ball effectively which includes at least being average in short yardage.

Stats are used to confirm your observations unless you're talking quantum physics. Not the other way around. Many here don't seem to understand this basic fact.

There's no way to do it, but I'd love to see if this would be the same with different coaching, including Callahan instead of Houck.
