The Jerry Problem

I think the issue with Jerry was highlighted in the NFLN show A Football Life when they did Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy said something that Jerry told him years ago when he was still there.

Apparently Jimmy made a trade to get Tony Casillas. The next day Jerry went out on the airwaves and proclaimed he pulled off the trade to get him. Jimmy was ticked off that Jerry would go out and take credit for something he didn't do. He then confronted Jerry about it. Jerry said to him (Paraphrased) "Jimmy, I can make 10 million dollars tomorrow but no one is going to care. But if I sign a back up guard everyone knows about it. I want to be part of that."

In other words, he craves the attention and adulation of being a "football guy" but in truth he really isn't/ He could go down in history as one of the greatest owners of all time but he prefers to be a mediocre-lousy GM.

This is the essence of the Jerry problem and thus the Cowboys problem is the very thing that will never go away.

I know we all knew this before but I had never heard the Casillas story like that before and it goes right to the heart of Jerry's problem.

And so it goes. It's frustrating to be a fan of this team at times, but I keep coming back for more. I'm to blame for that.

I thought the same thing when i first saw that. Also, it must have eaten @ jerra when Jimmy was asked about Jerry's football knowledge?!?!(haha) WHAT FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE?!:banghead:

Jerry was out one day shootin' up some food, and out from the ground came a bubblin' crude....

This is what happens when Jethro buys him up a football team.

From a human standpoint, I can't fault the guy for his determination to succeed at something outside the scope of his expertise, but as a fan who has suffered through nearly two decades of mediocrity, Jerry's compulsive need to be recognized as a "football guy" and refusal to place the reigns of the franchise into more competent hands are cardinal sins that should warrant eternal suffering.

There is no Jerry problem, its his team an nothing we hope or say will do anything to change it

Jerry has to have the biggest ego in all of sports and Jimmy runs a very close second. How those two lasted as long as they did is beyond me. We need a great coach with no ego so Jerry can take most of the credit. Does a coach like that exist?

Well there is nothing we can do to change anything about the team, but that does not stop us from saying who we think they should cut, sign or draft.

I to this day do not believe we have a Jerry problem. To me Jerry is the best owner in all of sports, I would not have it any other way. Arrows will always be aimed at the King on the hill...guess it just goes with the territory.

What other owner today has told his fan base that changes will be made, now u may not like the changes but at least we have some kind of info on what he intends to do.

I truly believe that we are close, this year we fought like hell with a decimated squad due to injury. A couple of added pieces this offseason and we will finally break through in 2013 and make a run at the whole thing.

The biggest problem with Jerry in my estimation is that he overvalues his talent and spends money in the wrong places. The Ratliff extension was moronic and is a good example.

Ratliff was extended when, 3 yrs ago? What was he, 27? Why would u not extend him at that time and if I remember correctly he did not exactly break the bank with the extension. Now today I believe it is time to let him go.

He was extended before last season and he had 2 years left on his contract. His original contract would have expired this season. Now, we have to eat a bunch of space to let him go.

9/9/2011: Signed a seven-year, $48.625 million contract. The deal contains $18 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus. 2012: $1.5 million (+ $500,000 roster bonus), 2013: $5 million, 2014: $5.5 million, 2015: $7 million, 2016: $7.5 million, 2017: Free Agent

You nailed it, man. Jerry tries to do too much. It would make the most sense for him to hire a football expert to be GM and Jerry will just be the owner. We had the chance to do that with Bill Parcells and we let it get away. I mean Jerry let that chance get away.

If he was JUST the owner I would agree. The Jerry problem is the GM Jerry. He thinks he has all this wisdom but he doesn't. He has tried to be something he is not. We talk about Garrett and On the job training but Jerry is doing just that with the GM.

As for "What other owner has told his fan base that things will change", well seven owners did that on Monday and began to "Make changes".

Jerry makes his decisions by consensus. Jerry has a huge staff for the football decisions. I would tend to believe that most GM's do it this way. The choices of late are much better, our young talent is improved, our talent acquisition this year is key. We add two to three key pieces and we will be a tough out in 2013.

I have no reason to jump anywhere, but I can express my frustrations about how the team I've followed for more than 40 years, is mis-managed.

I do not believe that most NFL GM's ask who and what they should be looking for? I view that as their job. You think Ernie Accoris asked Mara or TC if getting Eli was the right thing? He might have but he was going to make the call himself anyway...its his job as GM. Jerry just flat out isn't a football guy...the fact that he has to ask a group of people who to draft should tell you how far he values his own talent.

I do not think Jerry has the ability to go out and look at a guy in pads and know if he is the right guy for the Dallas system and needs. Jerry isnt sober past 12 moist days and he sure as heck isnt watching film with his own eyes and has never been able to establish a cultural system in Dallas.
