I think the issue with Jerry was highlighted in the NFLN show A Football Life when they did Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy said something that Jerry told him years ago when he was still there.
Apparently Jimmy made a trade to get Tony Casillas. The next day Jerry went out on the airwaves and proclaimed he pulled off the trade to get him. Jimmy was ticked off that Jerry would go out and take credit for something he didn't do. He then confronted Jerry about it. Jerry said to him (Paraphrased) "Jimmy, I can make 10 million dollars tomorrow but no one is going to care. But if I sign a back up guard everyone knows about it. I want to be part of that."
In other words, he craves the attention and adulation of being a "football guy" but in truth he really isn't/ He could go down in history as one of the greatest owners of all time but he prefers to be a mediocre-lousy GM.
This is the essence of the Jerry problem and thus the Cowboys problem is the very thing that will never go away.
I know we all knew this before but I had never heard the Casillas story like that before and it goes right to the heart of Jerry's problem.

It was pretty depressing to read the original post, but this just cracked me up.
