The Lessons in Denver

Denver's young QB, and commercial real estate's loss, Trevor Siemian made his debut against the best D in the NFC last season and they sure look like they haven't weakened.

While they did run the ball, and well, to help their QB who had played one down as a pro, a kneel down, they also asked him to play the position. He made his mistakes but Kubiak kept putting it on him to make plays and as Dungy said in the pregame "can't play it safe with that position".

I hope our guys were watching the involvement of the entire team with their new QB who had also rallied around him at practice. And when he made mistakes, they didn't back off in their support.

Those complaints about Romo allowed to get roughed up by the refs, take a look at what they allowed to happen to Newton. And this league is concerned about CTE? If I were him, I'd already have my lawyer filing a lawsuit against the league.

But what was the best lesson to take away from that game last night, except that we should have hired Gary Kubiak?

The lesson is not for us because most of us already know. I hope Booger & Son watched that game and got a grasp on how good teams are built and just how important the D is, especially when you're starting a young QB. Booger is a "follow the ball" GM and Son is no better. Maybe they watch this game on Sunday a little differently and see that they've failed to help their young QB as Denver did and Elway is a former QB for cryin' out loud and he knows, why don't they?

I am not wishing for a loss but one, because of our lack of defense, would surely be a good lesson. We've had this gaping wound in this team for too long and been putting Band-Aids on it.

If our defense holds opposing offenses to 17-21 points a game, we will win 10-12 games.

Problem is they will allow 35-45 a game.

That's what it's about in Denver. The defense will allow their offense to score few points a week and still be a super bowl contender.

Yeah they knocked Cam around. If Im Carolina I may think about dialing back the qb runs a bit. I think alot of our defensive problems are due to whiffs. Hardy, Gregory, Romac, and to an extent Mo and Carr and not finding more with our mid round lbs. But I agree this will absolutely have to be an emphasis next year. Of course we will probably be in need of a WR and RT early next year too....If we hit on Dak though it sures buys us some flexibility to go hard on defense. Lets hope they were right on Jaylon, watching Jack this year could be painful.

35-45 is a bit much. I mean we gave up 23 a game last year

They also got turnovers and put pressure on Cam.. Something I don't see us being very good at.

Were they extremely late hits like the one in our first game last year?

Will another one ever compare to that one? Maybe The one on Jim McMahon is the only one I've seen.
That's more my complaint is when they are so obviously late it's almost funny.

I only saw a couple of headshots worth calling and they called one of them, the rest were marginal/incidental or he was a runner at the time. Unless your name is Tom Brady you're not getting those calls.

The defense had nothing to do with the way Trevor played, and thought the D did help win the game, so did Trevor who did his part too.
Winning is a team effort, and if one guy flops bad the team can lose. (Carolina, the kicker, holder, and long snapper all flopped at the end.)

Dak just needs to do his part, and not worry about if the defense is doing theirs. Thats all he can do, and as fans, all we can do
is judge him by how he plays, not just win or lose.

The cowboys have in recent years focused more on offensive players, than defense.
They are building the team backwards, and never admitting they are rebuilding, as it is always a possible SB year.
The few times they went out on a limb for defensive standouts, it hasnt worked out.
Claiborne, hardy, ro, gregory, and so far J Smith.

JG is also a offensive coach, and doesnt seem to focus much on defense, and the 2 jones boys, are also more into offense and it shows.
We wont have a great defense anytime soon unless the guys we have start to play better than in the past or we get another DC.

That Demarcus Ware guy is good... Let's remember Denver gave up two turnovers and still won, but it was their defense that's the strength of their team. As for their QB, I would be happy if Dak can play as well. Seimian (?) was a 7th rounder I believe, so it really is a crap shoot. I think we have enough firepower to win the East, but beyond that IDK. We need to go all defense next year, FA and draft, before we'll really contend IMO. It was a great game to watch - looking forward to an interesting season even though my expectations have been lowered with Romo out.

We won't anything until we get a good defense. In the playoffs that's the most important thing. They let guys play a little more, a little more grabbing, holding pushing etc. Our defense is just not good enough. But it seems we at least have a sb quality offense. It's trending our way imo.

I think you want them to lose and look bad on D just so you can say you are right.
I say this because of your constant posts about the defense being so awful....why don't you wait a few games or so and see how they do first.

Only 4 teams scored more than 30 points against Dallas last year when Dallas had no offense.

No way in hell the defense gives up 35-45 points a game. Come on.

But Jerry and company has been trying to build the defense. For years they drafted LB/CB/Cb/S/DE and now as of lately, DT.

Now maybe they just weren't good at drafting those positions, but I've seen that they've tried.

If we give up 35 pts a game we will have the pick of the litter again next yr., regardless of how well our rookies play.
I'm hoping they are in the neighborhood of last years d with turnovers added to the equation

The huge hole on the team used to be the OL. Remember we still had Ware when the OL rebuild started.

IMO Jerry goes all in to address issues. He does not maintain as he moves forward. I believe it is part of him being loyal to a fault to players. He will fix something when it is broke.

I would not be surprised to see an all in approach to address the defense starting next year.

Siemian was mostly horrible, but I do like the idea that lessons can be learned because it was a team win for Denver. Denver's defense was ok, but they didn't lock down the game to the point where they could just hand off and win. Lots of people stepped up and made plays and it wasn't just on one person. That's a model the Cowboys can follow to success.
