I am always a bit torn as a football fan. On one hand I like the bye week because it extends the football season an extra week. I am all in favor of anything that give me more football season. Well, except the Pro Bowl. I just don't like it.
On the other hand it shelves my team for a week and makes me antsy. I do like the bye being in the middle of the season and towards the end of the bye weeks more than the usual (for the Cowboys it seems) early season bye week. The other thing about bye weeks that I hate is that it always seems like we face a team that is dangerous to us when they are coming off their bye week. This year we face the Giants in their house when they are coming off their bye week.
When it is the Cowboys bye week, until the games arrive I remain antsy. The focus turns from the Cowboys to the division rivals. So while the Cowboys rest up and heal up, I find what I hope will be 3 worthy opponents. This year we have a mixed bag to hope for.
Let's start with the obvious biggest threat in the division, the New York Giants. This week they fly across the pond to face the Miami Dolphins in London, England. In my opinion the only thing we can hope for in this game is that the Giants have some serious jet lag and the Dolphins drink Red Bull. It won't surprise me one bit if the Dolphins starting QB lives up to his surname against the Giants revived pass rush.
Philly travels to Minnesota to face the Vikings, the team we just faced. The Vikings can win that game. To do it they need to do two things. Continue to play good defense (don't know about you, but I thought their defense was bringing the lumber) and they need to give the ball to Adrian Peterson. I'm not sure who took Peterson out of the game plan, the Cowboys defense or the Vikings coaches, but it should be painfully obvious to anyone who has synapses that fire that he is their entire offensive game plan. Give him the ball and keep on giving it to him. They do that, they can beat the Eagles.
Finally we get to the Commanders. They drew the short straw this week and have been chosen as the virgins to be sacrificed to the Patriots in New England. This morning I talked to a buddy at work who is a Commanders fan. He said, "I think we match up well with them." Yeah, if by "match up well" you mean that you might actually score once in a while. Scoring on the Patriots isn't the trick. Preventing them from scoring is the trick. The Commanders have two chances to stop the Patriots offense, slim and none. It ought to be a fun week as a Cowboys fan to read the misery about them.
If only they had Darren "The Ball Hawk" Sharper.
