The math says Romo exit (whether trade or release) doesn't add up

It is typical that people--including media types who should know better--suggest it's crazy to think the Cowboys hang on to Romo b/c of all that cap space that can be gained by trading or releasing him.

But here it is. We save ~$5m.

Mind you, that's what back-ups like Chase Daniel and Josh McCown go for. (You may remember the Cowboys were rumored to pursue both of those at different points in the off-season.)

But let's say for the sake of argument that you could bring back Sanchez on his current $2m... affording us $3m (of that $5m saved) to spend elsewhere.

How valuable is $3m in the free agency market? Would it afford you a dependable pass rushing DE, for instance?

Oliver Vernon went to NYG for $13m/yr last off-season. An aging Mario Williams went to MIA for $8m/yr.

Probably not. The only DE who switched teams for something in the neighborhood of $3m was Chris Long (Rams to Pats for $2m). I'm going to assume most of us are somewhat familiar at least with the underwhelming resume' Long took with him to NE.

How about a dependable lock-down corner?

Norman famously went to the Skins for $15m/yr last off-season. The Giants got Jenkins from LA for ~$12m/yr.

Probably not. The only CB who switched teams for something in the neighborhood of $3m was Patrick Robinson (Chargers to Colts for ~$4m/yr).

Unfamiliar with Robinson? Per Indy Star story on Colts' moving him to IR: "Robinson managed just six starts for the Colts this season, and seven games overall. He defended five passes, forced one fumble and finished with zero interceptions. The low point arrived in Week 5 against Chicago, when Robinson allowed eight catches in nine targets for 138 yards and a touchdown. His biggest play of the year, a would-be interception against Tennessee in Week 7, was called back due to a penalty on Colts linebacker Josh McNary. Perhaps worst of all, Robinson never managed to stay on the field for more than three games straight."

Personally, I still maintain that if Romo wants to leave, he'll be granted his wish.

But it will be because of some sense of integrity and appreciation for what he's done for the organization... not because it actually helps the Cowboys in any substantive way for 2017.

Been saying it for a while now. Next off season is when getting rid of Romo makes economic sense, not this off season. Everyone knows conventional wisdom says Dallas cannot keep Romo next year but I'm not putting it past Jerry to do it anyway. You can keep him for another $5 million in cap space. I think the biggest obstacle to keeping Romo is his $14 million salary. Jones may be fine having a backup QB counting $24 million because his starter is only counting $500,000 but I doubt he is going to want to pay anyone including Romo $14 million in real money and hope they never play a down. It's going to be real interesting to say the least. Even more so if he plays tomorrow and can lead a scoring drive and not get hurt.

Per Overthecap.com, actually the cap savings is a little more than that for 2018.

Tony gets released June 1st. Its a business decision and a major distraction removed for the new starting QB and the coaching staff. The media would never let this QB controversy die. It would be a hardship for Prescott and all concerned including Tony. He will retire a Cowboy as he should.

There is no greater value to release him post June 1 than pre June 1, per Overthecap.com... also no greater value to release than to trade him. If he wants to leave, he'll be accommodated as soon as he wants.

As for the distraction to Dak... well, we've seen how hard it's been on Dak... it's clearly killing his game, so yeah, Jones & Son Inc will do all they can to get rid of him. (/sarcasm)

Tony will not want to stay here as a backup.

We'll see. You're probably right. But there are on-the-field circumstances for other teams that could make leaving less appealing than staying... ie, the teams that he'd like to go to have no interest, and/or teams that have no realistic shot at a SB anytime soon would be the only ones to have interest.

it really only takes a single playoff win to remove any chance of a qb controversy with Romo as a backup.

If we trade or release him we save $5 million in cap for 2017 AND we get his contract 100% off the books heading into 2018.

If we wait to release him on June 1st then the cap hit gets split between '17 and '18. So we save even more for the upcoming season.

One way or another Romo won't be here.

If it were only a matter of reason, yes. But people like to have something to talk about and media like to stir up things for people to talk about... so, the only thing that puts a muffle on that, imo, is a SB appearance or Tony getting hurt again.

Thanks for pointing that out. As I cycled through the Pre-June 1, Post-June 1 and Trade pull-down, for whatever reason, there was no change when I did so the first time. But you're right...

No way they can just release him now. I understand he wants to start somewhere but you do not release a franchise QB that can do what he did today. I hope they tell him he has three options. One, find a trade partner that will pay market value. Two, stay and fight it out with Dak and probably be the backup. Three, retire.

I have said this all along ..... Romo will not be outright released for cap savings alone this off season. He might be traded but if a trade is made this offseason it will NOT be for peanuts.

I personally believe it would take a 1st round pick or more to move him in this offseason. He is too valuable as a backup to just let him walk away regardless of his desire to start again.

He is under contract. We will see how it goes. .

First Jerry said he doesnt see the team being players in FA so get that out ouy of ur thought process.

Cap
right now dallas will be almost 6 mil over the cap

Trade romo 450k over
Restructure Tyron dallas is 7mil under
Restructure Fred and Dallas is 17mil under

You might say why would they do this, because this is what theyre contracts were intended to do. They set it up to do this on specific yrs. It amazes me Dallas' own fans have listened or realized this by now.

Think this is the yr Dallas cuts Free. 22.6 mil under

Cut Alfred Morris 24.3mil under

This is basically 5 obvious things that they can do to clear cap to do what they need and want. And thats 24.3mil with trading Romo and taking all his dead money off the books in 1 yr.

So calm down with all the cap room dramatics

I don't know all the Cowboys financial plans and everything but perhaps money releasing Romo helps sign the rookies or something this season.

I'm of the belief that Jerry is going to give Romo an outright release or trades Romo somewhere for a midround pick unless someone picks up the phone and offers a 1st. Jerry has a chance to show future players an organization that takes care of franchise guys by granting Romo the release. That's worth more than compensation.

Romo is unique situation
if he wants to stay, Jerry will keep him regardless of finances
i believe that Romo wants to play and therefore will be traded or released
