There's trouble on the free agency front for Dallas.

Soon, teams are going to be required to meet a minimum salary threshold, and there are a handful of teams that are woefully short of that number. As in, they'd better start spending some money asap.

Dallas isn't one of them, although the Cowboys salary cap situation is much better than in years past.

The problem is, several of the mid to upper range free agents are likely to get OVERPAID because teams have to spend money. The motivation is there for them to overly compensate players like Demarco Murray, as well as all those free agents we like to toss around as good fits for Dallas.

It's one of the reasons I hate the minimum salary rule. It just doesn't level the playing field as much as it leads to overpaying players, which starts a domino effect throughout the league.

Dallas could easily meet this with Dez new Deal and restructuring Tyron and Romo, beause that will be actual cash being spent when they give them the money up front from the restructures

We can restructure tony and Tyron. And carr takes a pay cut. We can have over 32 million in cap space with a few moves. Everyone needs to relax.

Whoosh. You missed the point.

Jacksonville has $65 million in cap space with a very young team. They are REQUIRED to spend most of that, which means they have to sign a ton of free agents. They'll probably just overpay players to get to that number.

Same for Oakland, Cleveland, Indy, NY Jets, Philly.......

Players won't sign here if they can get overpaid by rule elsewhere.

He means reverse restructure, I think. Give Romo, Tyron and Dez more $ up front = more against the cap for that year.

Teams take the risk though.

OK heres the thing about this salary cap floor. That i think people dont know, and i have posted about this before.

Teams like the jags bucs and raiders dont care about the salary cap floor. They cant reach it even spending big this yr. And who cares theres no penalty from it. What happens is, the league gets the total number of actual cash not spent and all 32 teams write a check for the difference and is paid to players. So if the league as a whole has say 320mil difference each team writes a check for 10mil. They dont care about no salary floor. Jags dont spend because their owners cant sit there and write checks that the Cowboys or the giants or the patriots can write. Seems like the one who missed the point is you.

That's not the point though. Jacksonville could probably restructure and create $80 million in cap space.

The problem is, teams are now REQUIRED to spend to the cap, so some teams will be able to pay more than Dallas for a player no matter, and they're almost being forced to do so.

But Jerry isn't writing a check if he's at the cap. No, the teams not at the cap will be the ones writing the check. They might as well use it on players for THEIR teams.

Section 9. Minimum Team Cash Spending:
(a) For each of the following four-League Year periods, 2013–2016 and 2017–2020, there shall be a guaranteed Minimum Team Cash Spending of 89% of the Salary Caps for such periods (e.g., if the Salary Caps for the 2013–16 and 2017–2020 are $100, 120, 130, and 150 million, respectively, each Club shall have a Minimum Team Cash Spending for that period of $445 million (89% of $500 million))
(b) Any shortfall in the Minimum Team Cash Spending at the end of a League Year in which it is applicable (i.e., the 2016 and 2020 League Years) shall be paid, on or before the next September 15, by the Team having such shortfall, directly to the players who were on such a Team’s roster at any time during the applicable seasons, pursuant to the reasonable allocation instructions of the NFLPA.
(c) Nothing contained herein shall preclude a Team from having Cash Spending in excess of the Minimum Team Cash Spending, provided that the Team complies with the accounting rules of the Salary Cap set forth in Article 13.
(d) If the NFL agrees, or a final judgment or award is entered by the System Arbitrator, that a Team has failed by the end of an applicable League Year to make the payments required to satisfy a Team’s obligations to pay the Minimum Team Cash Spending required by this Agreement, then, in the event the Team fails promptly to comply with such agreement, judgment or award, the NFL shall make such payment on behalf of that Team (such funds to be paid as salary directly to the players on such Team at the direction of and pursuant to the reasonable allocations of the NFLPA).

Ahh thats right by each team. And teams have this yr and next yr to get this done. All teams should be there at the 89% mark.

10 teams are under 89% right now
Oakland 80.2%
Carolina 80.8%
Jets 81.7%
Jaguars 82.2%
Dallas 82.6%
Patriots 82.7%
Saints 86.2%
Commanders 87%
Giants 87.9%
Steelers 88.3%

This is nothing new though...what big time free agents settle for teams like the Jags other than aging vets who have nowhere else to go?

Thank the Jags and Raiders for this................the CBA included a salary cap minimum so that cheap arse franchises don't just sit on $60 million in cap space year after year after year.
