Emmitt talked extensively about his legacy and wanting 20K yards so that it would be his record forever.

he also talked about loving the game of football

Silly me -- I forgot this board was "Homerville"

Gee -- Emmitt must have really loved the game to go play for a crap team for 2 years.

Who are we to decide when another person should quit doing something? Something they loved, something they devoted their entire life to.
What if someone told you that your posts on this board had really gone down hill and you shouldn't post here or even come the this site anymore? Would you listen?

If anything, that expresses his love for the game even more, so I dont see how your point makes any sense. He loved playing the game so much that he played for the Cardinals for 2 years.

Jordan did.

I agree Emmitt was padding stats, but I don't find anything wrong with it.

He worked his whole life for that. Achieved every team and indiviual honor there is. Why not keep playing, if you love it, and you can? I guess I don't see where someone should stop doing something they love, as long as someone will give them a job.

you just are a hater bro, its not homerism

the guy didn't wanna admit it was over

and by the way what is wrong with wanting your name in the history books?
guys that break records don't wanna think about being forgotten in 100 years.
you calling it padding his stats is very close minded way to look at it.

At age 35. After more than 4,140 career carries.

Jerome Bettis is being hailed as a hero after rushing for 368 yards at 3.3 YPC, and he was only 33 with about 1,000 fewer carries of pounding.
thank you adam, I knew you could correct him with a much better reply than I could muster.

I am amazed at these so-called fans who criticizes when a player does not go out when they (the fans) determine they should leave the game.

I was disappointed when Dr. J retired, I thought he had several more years left in him as a sixth man. But I could understand him not wanting to go that route and retiring.

He felt that he had given all that he could to the game. I could not be angry with him, because he ignored my plans of him winning a couple of 6th man of the year awards, before riding off into the sunset.

It was his career and his life.

I think my point was he should have quit -- at least Bettis has a reason to stay -- he was on a team with a legit shot at a SB with the team that he had played for most of his career. Emmitt's stayed b/c he didn't want anyone breaking his record.
Now when did Smith tell you this was his reason for staying?

If we are just going to make stuff up, I'll say he stayed because he was a closet lifelong Cardinal fan, and would have gladly given up the superbowls, rushing titles and MVP award to spend his career in Arizona.

oh. so I'm a so-called fan now.

Emmitt needed to retire -- like many of the greats he didn't no when to step away.

If you all could take off your 22 jerseys for a second you'd find it much easier to be objective here.

But explain to me why he NEEDED to retire? Was it just because he was not as good as he was in his prime?

He was still better than a lot of guys much younger, like Hambrick. Who I might add was still getting opportunities even after his season as a starter in Dallas.

So what was so wrong with Smith trying to play longer?

just because emmitt didnt retire at the top like jim brown or berry sanders doesnt mean that he was padding his stats.

the guy loved the game and wanted to keep playing wherever he could, yes he wanted more yards and TDs and all that stuff, but who doesnt? Bill Gates is still making money, Brett Favre is still throwing passes, Barry Bonds will continue to hit home runs . . . nobody wants to stop doing what they are good at because they lose who they are, and why lose who you are when you can become even better?

The Yankees are like the Commanders in a way. They dont know a thing about team chemistry and dont draft well, but every year go out and try and win it all by signing the biggest name free agents. I hate the Yankees for that simple reason. Because big George has all the money, he just gets every big name player regardless of team chemistry. Its rediculous.

Yea, "rediculous.......that anyone can post something so obviously incorrect and not see it. The Yankees are one of the best drafting teams in baseball despite drafting towards the end of the rounds. There are more Yankee drafted/signed players in the All Star game than any other team year in and year out.

Actually, you all have it wrong!

The true story of Emmitt's success is that he was the LUCKIEST RB in the HISTORY of Football!!

At Escambia High School in Pensacola, FL, he played 4 years and in those 4 years set the career rushing record for the State of Florida and was 2nd all-time behind Ken Hall for the all-time national high school career rushing record. What a GREAT OL he had at Escambia!!

Then, Emmitt moved on to play 3 years at the Univ. of Florida and in those 3 years he became The Univ. of Florida's career rushing leader. He likely would have broken Dorsett's (then) National Collegiate rushing record if he had stayed in school. What a GREAT OL he had at Florida!!

Then, for the 3rd time in his career, he plays for the great Dallas Cowboys, (who all the pundits and naysayers know had the greatest OL in history) and Emmitt ends up as the NFL's all-time rushing leader!!

The bottom line on his career is that Emmitt was LUCKY to play behind such GREAT OLs his entire football career!!

by saying he had a Great Offensive line ...

ask the arguer of that position whether he supports Gesek, Gogan, Stepnoski, Williams (yes, we know Allen should go) as Hall of Fame candidates.

If not, then tell them to SHADDUP!

Not to detract from your point, but you might pose that same question about the others at or near the top of the all time list:

Barry, Walter, Eric..... I can't think of any of those players who had star-studded lines in front. In fact, it has been mentioned as a supporting argument for the position that Barry was the best. The fact that he did what he did with the lack of talent on his line.

I think you missed the point of his post. No one questions whether those other guys were great backs, yet with Emmitt the naysayers always point to his "Great" OLs as the reason for his success.

The post just points out that Emmitt would have been great no matter what team he played for.

Post of the day. C.A.

I should just print that and hand it out to the nonbelievers when they spout that nonsense that he was only good because of his great O-line.
