The game football is changing fast. My column in the Blue Star Times:

If you’re reading this, you’re not likely the fan the NFL is after. You already consume it with both hands. You love this game, you know what it’s about, and you know what it’s supposed to look like.

They know you know, and they don’t care. You’re already in the bag anyway.

You’d probably agree that the most compelling games we’ve seen in the past decade were those 10-7 fistfights between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. And the best recently have come from San Francisco and Seattle, among the rare teams playing a lick of defense the past two years.

Oh, the NFL agrees with you in principle, but again, they don’t care.

It was a good piece....but the 10 - 7 Baltimore vs Pittsburgh fistfights were not compelling football to me at all....good, clean, physical football is compelling to me...and whatever the score is I can live with...but there are many reasons I do not like Pittsburgh...and I will not use this thread to get on that soap box.

NFFL is more like changing the fans....get / makes fans who don't really care for a team, only bragging rights to win or make money [nothing wrong with that].
I came across quite a few of these in my travels. They follow players, but really don't know the sport in some ways.

I never played it and do not intend to. Personally for me it's a waste of time, goes along with facebook, or ...wastebook...but that's just my opinion, to each their own.

Total penalties are up 43.7 percent from last year through the first two weeks of preseason games, according to the league's figures. There have been 756 penalties so far this preseason, compared to 526 last year through two weeks of preseason games.

The league's referees have been told to make illegal contact a major point of emphasis, especially on the defensive side. It will be interesting to see how the numbers hold up when the NFL season kicks off on Sept. 4.

I hate the constant rule changes to try and benefit offense. Now with the illegal contact being called as it is these games are becoming a joke.

You make a lot of assumptions about what your readers think/believe. Im not sure what your experience level is as a writer, but from one professional to another, that is a huge turn-off unless your article is pure camp or satire.

Fantasy Football is meh, I really don't care if non NFL fans are tracking stats and stuff. The only difference is the way it is broadcasted/reported on or highlights game breakdown is to appease them more.

I believe it will lead to many inconsistent calls over the 1st few weeks or so. Some crews may keep calling them close, others may not. And from week to week, the defensive players won't know how to play within the perceived rules. But I can see some DB instead of taking a chance on a cheap penalty, let the WR catch it, then just level him, no holding, no PI, no illegal contact, no hit on a defenseless receiver.....just sit back and wait...then BOOM, lights out. But then I'm sure, the league will come up with something against that too.

Regarding the comment about Steelers/Ravens and Seahawks/49ers rivalries, I personally enjoyed the Patriots/Colts (when Peyton was there) rivalries the most. Those games were interesting. Both teams had great QBs, but the Patriots also had an amazing coach and a top defense. It would turn into "Can Peyton overcome the great collective known as the NE Patriots?" I like teams that are completely different because you never know what to expect. For example, nobody really had any idea how this past Super Bowl would go. It could have easily been a Broncos blowout (instead of the other way around), or it could have been a high scoring shootout, or a low scoring dog fight. You really had no idea. I knew what to expect from Steelers/Ravens.

I miss the days of colorful trash talking, getting mad at opposing coaches, hard-nosed defense, touchdown celebrations...the players looked like they had an emotional investment in the game. Who didn't like T.O. getting trucked the second time he went to the Star? Or J.J. and Buddy Ryan feuding? I miss a lot of the old NFL :(

Fantasy football is only fun for the time during the live draft. After that I don't care about it at all really. And that's after winning a couple of leagues the last few years and I still don't really care beyond the live draft itself.

Y'all sound like Richard Sherman.

"It's fantasy footballs fault, not my constant manhandling of receivers or my cynical rulebreaking"

Brag about how you hold the flow of the game hostage in order to get a competitive advantage and this is what happens. The refs will calm down once the LOB decides that yes, the rules do apply to them. That will happen around the 3rd straight week of 25 penalty games for the Seahawks.
