"The mistake the Seahawks made was that they were too in-your-face about it. Pete Carroll and crew arrogantly decided to foul on virtually every play last season, challenging officials to throw flags at an alarming rate. They didn’t, and instead adjusted their calls during Seahawks games. Others rightly complained that all games should be called the same."

I've said this for years...we are already the most penalized team regardless of our coach (thanks league...that is JJ but not in the way you think;)) Shame the refs into holding that flag if you need to...even if it only effects the refs subconsciously, etc. The refs are reviewed and graded, so the incessant ticky-tack calls would harm them just as much as the team they may want to spite. Tin foil hat now removed. :D

I think the league would be better served to help defenses if their aim was to entice fantasy football players.

Manning, Brees, and Rodgers are so far ahead of the pack in FF scoring that drafting one of them is a lock to be competitive in the league. These guys will also benefit more from the rules than crappy QBs will because they're better, further increasing the disparity between them and all other QBs.

Helping defenses lets FF players have a chance at making up the scoring they aren't getting from their QB because defenses don't go early.

Those goal line passing scores would likely shift back to RBs, further giving people a way to get those points.

I'm not sure more prolific passing helps FF players because it comes at the expense of other positions and makes draft order all the more important.

This.
Sometimes I forget to update my roster week to week.
And I think that's when my FF team does the best...

I won the league I run for my buddies last year without ever changing my roster or looking at it one time after week 2.

I won another league a couple of years ago, I think it was the one we were doing here, without making it to the draft (I preset my draft thing), and I don't think I changed my line up but twice.

another interesting caveat is with IDP's, points can be adjusted such to make defensive stats worth just as much as offensive stats.

The thing is that defense matters just as much as offense in fantasy. Sure Offensive stats matter, but great defenses are just as big a part of the equation since you definitely have to know what defense a player is going up against that week. If the game is predominantly dominated by defenses, fantasy football would still be a thing, just all players would have lower scores, and therefore still on an even playing field. I think a league dominated by defense would actually be even more interesting for fantasy because it would absolutely force you to know the personnel on the defensive side of the ball before putting a player in your lineup

The NFL's insistence on increasing scoring and making things unfair for defenders is the main reason my interest in the NFL's waned. Though from their ratings, I'm in the minority.

The game football is changing fast. My column in the Blue Star Times:

If you’re reading this, you’re not likely the fan the NFL is after. You already consume it with both hands. You love this game, you know what it’s about, and you know what it’s supposed to look like.

They know you know, and they don’t care. You’re already in the bag anyway.

You’d probably agree that the most compelling games we’ve seen in the past decade were those 10-7 fistfights between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. And the best recently have come from San Francisco and Seattle, among the rare teams playing a lick of defense the past two years.

Oh, the NFL agrees with you in principle, but again, they don’t care.

Read the article: http://bluestartimes.com/the-nffl-is-ruining-pro-football/

multiple reasons behind that. I am sure when football was changing in the 50 and 60s there were those who complained that the game is changing and the old leather helmets meant toughness, etc. and when the game changed in the 90s, there were others who complained.

its much more complex than just playing defense. its a game of money. in the 60, 70s players had regular jobs and played for the love of the game. now, its millions at stake and the stakes are much higher. so to increase revenue and bring in more people, they want more scoring.

by the same token we are also more educated today. in the old days you got your clock rung and they gave you smelling salt. now we know about concussion. and injuries are more serious, players are bigger, faster, etc. there is law suits and people's lives at stake.

so the game needs to change and adapt to the times. the same rules apply to every team. so its not targeting one or the other. there will be more rule changes, more equipment changes, etc. in the future and current young football fans, who fall in love with the game today and become old timer fans in 30, 40 years will complain about the changes to children and fans of the future.

I don't have a preference for one or the other. the game will change, that's to be expected. so manage your expectations and stop complaining.
