If Pollard doesn't have permanent damage he's totally worth the 10mil. I'd pay more, but now don't have to.

We *did* pay more for Schulz. And Gallup. And Zeke. Ugh.

Worse, we'll pay more for Gallup *again* next year.
He's definitely worth it, but the cowboys can find a good RB in the draft and have many personnel decisions to make. I'm am hoping this is the year they bring in a blue chip FA to fill a glaring void (DT). Gallup should be more like his 2021 self. Zeke and Schultz should not be brought back.

Can doesn't mean will. Though I thought that Schulz *could* be easily replaced, I didn't have a cow over his franchise tag because I'll admit there was a significant chance that any pick would we took *would not* be good enough.
Schultz was a bridge player we kept because we had nothing else, and we made it across that bridge.
That's the way I see signing Pollard. Only Pollard is much harder to replace at his level, and much more worth the money we're talking about. He's just better, and that RB tag is less than I expected. We didn't develop alternatives to Zeke and Pollard, so now we're exposed to potentially having *nothing* at RB come next year. So sign Pollard, *and* draft some RBs.

Betting on being able to get guys later in the draft works when you keep em coming while you have other starters under contract. It's a big roll of the dice to rely on it when you absolutely need a new starter.

You're more hopeful on Gallup than I am. I wasn't much disappointed in Gallup this year because I didn't expect much. I did think he got better at slants, and appreciated that, but he's a 2nd or 3rd WR benefitting from defensive attention going elsewhere. As I said at the time, Gallup's heroics when Dak broke his ankle was Peak Gallup. Should have traded him then.

I'm surprised at the people who want to tag Pollard. He is damaged goods and tagging him for one year when he may not be entirely healthy goes against the very thing you guys always preach.

It may or may not be an either or but would you rather have Tyron Smith or Pollard?
Tyron Smith easlily.............He can play either RT or LT and play them at a very high level.

If worst comes to worst, I let Zeke and Pollard walk and draft Bijan from UT to be my workhorse RB.

Donovan Wilson is a great example of a good player who has developed here that too many people here over-value. He’s good. But he’s not great. Keeping him here either tagged or on a market deal would be foolish in my book because finding someone who replaces what he gives us won’t be that hard.
Exactly...........paying DW $14 million would be monumentally stupid.

I can go find a box safety for a hell of a lot cheaper than that.

RB tag is low. Good deal to tag Pollard.
Relatively speaking, the RB tag is a better and cheaper tag than most other tags. But there is an opportunity cost lost by using the tag on Pollard. You can spend $10m on Pollard (who will have some degree of risk that he will never be the same player post injury) OR you can draft a RB or two in the draft and pay a player like Payne a majority of that $10m.

It’s going to be a lot easier to draft another Pollard than it is to draft a Payne late in the first round. I like Pollard but he is not worth $10m per year, and neither was Schultz this past season.

Tony or Wilson.

They’ll try to get a long term deal done with DW and I suspect they use the tag on him if they can’t sign him before March.

If DW gets signed, look for Tony to get tagged.
Neither.

I am fine with letting Pollard, Wilson and Schultz walk. We just need to be proactive in replacing Pollard. I believe what we have in house should be fine for the other two.

Can we franchise Prescott and get some of our money back?
The Cowboys GM capitulated to the starting Cowboys QB that in his most recent contract:
A) The currrent Cowboys QB cannot be traded unless said QB wants to leave the team;
B) The current Cowboys QB cannot be franchised.

Free Agency comes before the draft.

Would have had to draft a RB last year to go without Pollard this year.

Payne's going to cost 20M per on a 5 year deal. A one time 10M savings has minimal relevance to signing Payne.

I think the team WILL franchise Pollard, but I think it is a minor mistake.

The only other legit option is to sign a starting RB in free agency to a multi-year contract...
I understand your line of thinking. But is it any less critical to find a legit stud DT as it is stud RB?

The stud DT is cheaper in the draft, no doubt. But will we go that direction in the draft early enough for it to matter?

Lots of schools of thought. Most of them have some level of validity. Hard cap decisions have to be made.

If they franchise Pollard, and draft a RB later on in the draft, that’s reasonable, but will they get that difference making DT?

Very good rookie RB's coming out.
They cannot roll the dice that they'll get a rookie RB that is NFL ready day 1.

That would almost force them to use a 1st round pick on a RB.

Early round picks are not only about talent. Ready-now is also a big part of what pushes some players up the draft board.
