And a young Sean Payton as O.C that went to the Super Bowl with Kerry Collins at QB. They had a situation similar to the Parker/ Pettine situation. it was a complete DISASTER the first half of the season with the younger version of Payton as offensive play caller. After the 6th game or so Fassel relieved him of play calling duties and the Giants offense improved dramatically, so much so they ended up making the super Bowl. Hopefully we can end up with the same kind of turnaround. IT CAN HAPPEN,....they proved it can. Actually,....that turned out to be the best thing that happened for Payton's young career long term!

I remember that!! I remember thinking Payton was a crappy coach because of that, but boy, did he turn it around, and I think CP will too; he is just so young. There are players on the team older than he is.

Paytons offense/play calling was far too complicated with players spending too much time thinking instead of PLAYING. Lots of confusion going on. Sound familiar? Younguns are almost always in a big hurry to re invent the wheel.

But......Payton took the news hard. He acted like a pro,...but he was not happy at all. He wasn't with the Giants the next year and then we signed him.

The Giants had at least 2-3 All Pros, I believe on that defense.

Armstead and Strahan is all I can remember.

The Duo of CP and Pettine should have no problem doing the same with our ballers......could be Downs, Quinnen and possibly Big Poppa Pump.

They lost 34-7 in the Super Bowl and the offense was bad pretty much all year.

Starting with week 6, including playoffs (14 games), they scored fewer than 20 points 6 times (3-3).

It was a different league then but changing the playcaller didn't really make a difference.

Yep,...you are correct. I misremembered and thought it was close.

Mmmm...the offense was only scoring like 10 points a game before Fassel took over.

They ended up losing a close but most boring super Bowl in history to the Ravens but..... :)
Don't know if I've ever heard anyone refer to that super bowl as 'close'.

The score remained reasonably close from a box score perspective, but it felt over when the Ravens got a pick-6 to go up 17-0 because it was Collins 4th interception of the game.

It was clear the Giants weren't going to do anything on offense almost immediately.

The real lesson here is that Eberflus should have called in Rob Ryan to help him with the defense last year

Jerry put together one of the strongest defensive rosters we've seen here and Eberflus just mismanaged it

Lost opportunity.....

True. Like I said earlier...I misremembered the score.

The only season i can remember in which one participant in an NFC Championship game didn’t show up.

That was a good example. The Armstead/Strahan/Hamilton line was a great one.

Heres another Giants example

In 2007 Spagnuolo, as a first time DC, gave up like a hundred points to start the season. The fans were going berserk. They ended up winning the Super Bowl.

Of course, he had one greatest pass rushing d-lines in giants history to help him turn it around, but it’s another example of a bad start that turned around.

That team also had Strahan as well as Osi, Tuck and the great Antonio Pierce. Over 50 sacks that year.

We’re on pace for 17, lol.

Hopefully we catch Jimmy and Wannatedt’s first season when they had 23 which is the franchise record for fewest sacks. All they had was Jeffcoat but this years pass rushers make Jeffcoat look like Demarcus Ware.
